Booting external floppy drives

My relatively new computer didn't come with a floppy drive, but I want access to my floppys. Installing an internal one seems to be quite a hassle with my machine as I only have bays for cd-rom sized devices. Nothing that fits the standard floppy disk size. Therefore I'm getting an external USB drive instead.

I've been investigating to try and find out if my computer is able to boot from an external floppy drive, but I've not found any info yet. I went into the BIOS to find a version number, but found several numbers and I don't know which one refers to the bios. Here are the numbers I found.

3.11
08/00/12
04/10/06

I take it 3.11 is the bios version but I had trouble finding info on the internet about it.

My computer is a Compaq. Can't remember the model number, but I can find out.

You can get an internal floppy drive that fits into a 5.25" cd-rom drive bay rather than a 3.5" floppy bay.

As far as if it's bootable, it does depend on the bios. Who makes the bios for your compaq?

Do you know any british online stores where I can get such a device? [EDIT}Never mind. I found lots using froogle.[/EDIT]

I remember seeing the name of the company that makes my bios, but I can't remember now. I'll reboot my machine later and check.

My BIOS was made by American Megatrends and it is version 02.58.
