Help with installing USB
Posted: Tue Nov 08, 2005 1:57 am
Hello,
I would like to be able to use USB (any version/speed) on a quite old computer. The problem is that I do not know if it really has any support for USB, I have no motherboard manual and I cannot contact the vendor. I went to Windows' device manager and saw there is a main division called "Universal Serial Bus controllers". It contains two sub-divisions called "USB Root Hub" and "Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller" and in the "Power properties" of the root hub there is "2 port(s) available". I also went to the "System Information" utility. I included the results at the end of the post.
I do not have any visible USB connector on the PC case rear.
So, I would like to know, according to your experience with hardware, if I may possibly keep the available hardware and just add some connector cables from the motherboard to the case rear, or if I will have to add something like a PCI card with extra connectors. If you still cannot help me, please could you provide some information about how I could identify USB built-in ports, if they are somehow different than other (color, shape, location, ...).
Thank you for any help.
