Humans are capable of destroying the earth, but they'll destroy their own social structures before it gets that far.

Much worse has happened to the earth than us, it'll survive. Of course, we won't be quite as lucky...
I notice a tendency to refer to "killing the earth" or suchlike while assuming that if we can't live here then nothing else can. There are a lot of species that would survive or adapt to survive in an environment that would finish us off.
