I've got a 80GB HD,which has some info i need... problem is I dont know how to attach this HD to my system.

My system has
the primary master as User( guess thats my 40gb hd)
and primary slave as cd-rom

now there are no extra data plugs on my data cable, so i removed the cd-roms connections and try to start my pc
it didnt work.
so i set that primary slave as Auto
the sys started fine.

now i attached this new 80gb hd to those cables (data and power which i removed from the cd-rom)

when i start my sys it gives a msg primary slave errors.

any help as to what i should do to get this straightned out would be appricated. waiting......

1) Reattach your CD-ROM to primary slave and undo all setting changes.

2) Get another IDE cable.

3) Find the second IDE port on your controller / mainboard (right next to the first one).

4) Set HD to "master".

5) Connect cable to controller / mainboard on one end and HD on the other end.

6) Go to BIOS and make sure that secondary IDE is configured as functional / "Auto".

That should do it.

i would like to get a similar walk through as to how i can partition this disk.

u mean this second HD should be secondary master? cause the primary master is my HD which has the OS etc. ???

Yes, the second HD should be secondary master. (Prefer HD's to be master on a IDE chain.)

As for partitioning... you said the HD has some info you need. That means you do not partition it! If it has info on it, it already is partitioned, and its partitions should show up in your explorer. Unless it's formatted in some filesystem not known to your OS, in which case you're borked until you can find out which FS it's formatted in...
