vmware running linux 2.4 kernel

when starting the kernel the cpu crashes on a SSE MOVUPS which is supported by my processor, but vmware appears to not like it. How do I make linux skip raid checksum speed testing (I never use raid in vmware...) or rip out the bit that says sse is supported?
