Well, you can either:
A. Spend a lot of money promoting it
or
B. Just have great content...If you give people a reason to come to your site, they just will. But, that is the hard part after all, huh?
I don't think it's possible to decide to have a popular site. It just happens. So put up what you like, if you just so happen to share interests with others, then it will get popular. Promotion is good too, if there is something to promote. Don't say, "my site is great, you should go to it!" and then have nothing there to offer once the person arrives.
Good luck,

To make your site famous, leave it on the web long enough...
.
You have something to offer: the games you have programmed. So if they are on your site and your game spreads, more people will come to your site as well. It's a combination of having good content and making the content refer back to the webpage.

I recommend submitting your site to google, they give my site(agigames.com) a ton of hits, infact google gives me most of my hits out of the rest of the search engines.

Doesn't google find the site for itself? As far as I know, it sends out robots that "catch" sites and put them in the database. But submitting your site to some other search engines such as Altavista might be useful as well.

Yes it does find sites itself, but they also have an option to add your site just incase your site isn't ever found by their crawlers.
