The important point to remember is the fact that despite the fact it's not legal and they'll probably be fined a small amount, the cost would be way cheaper than if they went and paid for some huge billboard or a television advertisement.
There are now articles in newspapers, news sites and word of mouth talking about microsoft and it's new msn 8. Isn't that worth a few $50 fines?
Hopefully the city officials will realise this and give them a few years in jail instead.

So, does this mean that for $50 I can go to New York and put stickers promoting my new CD all over the place?
That's cheap advertisement space.

Hehe, so basically, what happened is they planned to get a fine for posting illegal posters so they could get lots of publicity?
WHAT A GREAT IDEA!

That's where my problem with it lies Tom...Microsoft SHOULD have been fined $50 per sticker, but they were only fined $50 total. ::)
A single summons was issued, with a $50 penalty, though each butterfly could have been subject to a $50 fine, said Tom Cocola, the assistant commissioner for public affairs at the transportation agency. He said the city's chief goal was seeing to it that the decals are removed.
I did hear somewhere that they were helping with clean up. But, I bet if I did the same thing I WOULD get fined $50 per sticker. Regardless as to how much I helped clean up...

$50 per sticker is probably way cheaper than if they had to have ads in websites, newspapers and billboards. (which is the coverage they got in the end)

In New York...my god, I don't even want to know how much a billboard would cost...
kind of like that fight club thingy....
if it is cheaper to pay off lawsuits for people killed...don't recall
if it is cheaper to do a recall than pay lawsuits...recall
I'm sure the eggheads at microsoft balanced the odds of a big fine next to billboard costs. Sometimes I hate hating microsoft because everyone does. Let's face it, there isn't out there that's much better. It's tactics like that though that just piss me off. >:(
grrrr...

Sorry, removed it. Still, that's no way for a corporation to act. They have enough money for the advertisements, but still want to save on it by doing such a thing.
The city on the other hand acts as a sidekick of Microsoft. They know that Microsoft will keep on doing those things if no serious actions are taken, but still keep the fine lower than fined citizens. If the city wanted, they could lower taxes by fining Microsoft something from around 500$ per butterfly. It wouldn't be a problem for Microsoft to cough up that amount of money, but they'll think twice next time and the city'll have lots of money which can be used to improve it or lower taxes.
