Building a compiler

I have always been interested in how things work. That is why I have recently become interested in how a compiler works. How they are built and how I can build one.
Look up a set of articles by a guy called Jack Crenshaw. Should give you a decent start. I think there's a couple of usenet groups dedicated to compiler technology too.
Google is your friend for both.
