Does anyone know where to get a .mdb database format specification, even just a brute force attempt to understand it.

Difficult, since AFAIK the file format is still not officially documented by MS, who change it with each new version - or did until Access 2002, at which point it was replaced with a completely new format (Access Database Project, or .adp). You may want to get in touch with the developers on the MDB Tools project for advice, or perhaps review the source for StarOffice.

I will look into both of these options.
