Eager to Develop an OS...

Hello. My name is Robert Santellan, and one of my biggest dreams is to develop a revolutionary operating system. I know, I know. I am aiming pretty high, but it has always been a dream of mine.
Anyways,I have one problem. I know absolutely nothing about OS development. No code knowledge, no idea what I need, where to start, or even how to get the knowledge and supplies I need.
What I really need is someone to walk me through it. I don't care if it is just a port of another OS or something. I just want something that I can call my own and market at a low price without breaking any laws you know?
So...if someone could just walk me through it or even give me a hand with my project, I would really appreciate it.
Feel free to email me at
if you think you can help me.

First, Do you know anything about programming? If so what languages?
I don't think it makes any sense for someone to "walk you through" making an OS. It will take an enormous amount of time for both you and that person, and will not contain any of your revolutionary ideas because they will be making all the important decisions. Aside from which, I don't think you will find anyone with that much time to devote to it. If you really want to do this, you need to learn the skills yourself. Unfortunately, since I don't know what level of knowledge you have, I can't give you any pointers right now as to where to start looking for info yet.

Given that it is not exactly likely that you could knock Windows, or even Linux, off its perch, you would need to have some kind of niche market in mind if you want to sell it. Any idea what that niche market might be?

As long as they're not more than a year old, just let 'm. They might respond (recently saw a topic where the guy still responded) and some people have email notification since they don't visit these fora much.

We all started in this position. Something that helped me a lot in my early days was
this book. It's getting a bit old now, but a surprising amount of it still applies. I'd suggest getting hold of a copy, if you can (it's out of print, and copies tend to change hands at rather high prices, but perhaps a library somewhere near you has one...?).

Very true. I would have to say that the collective programming talent of the Linux\OSS community is so much more prevalent that it is not comparable to that of Window's programming community. It's almost sad really....Yet, who has the largest market share?

Unfortunately.
