This year, the FOSDEM (in Brussels, 6-7th February 2010) will host the
"Alt-OS" devroom on sunday from 9:00 to 17:00.

This devroom is meant as a place for Free and OpenSource Alternative
Operating System projects to share ideas and work on topics like:

• distinguishing design and features,
• device drivers and how to share them,
• sharing code for internal components,
• internal usage of other FOSS projects to build upon,
• application portability,
• interoperability,
  • file formats,
  • extended attributes...

We are interested to hear about your OS projects, how they are
designed, and what they could eventually share for other projects'
benefit.

Eh, yeah it's really for developers, no politics, no commercial stuff.
It's really nice, I participated last 2 years (held the Haiku booth), and it was really fun.

Please forward as much as possible to FOSS OS projects you might know about !

Could you please confirm the format of this date? 1st May 2010 or 5th January 2010 (now expired) ?

I know.. I wished I lived in a place with events like this (we have Linux installfests but they're dominated by networking/IT guys rather than programmers/computer scientists!) Belgium is a bit far to travel.

The idea of an Oceania/South-East-Asia chapter sounds nice.

Actually, I think it may have expired.

"2010-01-05" is ISO 8601 format. It's always YYYY MM DD; it's unambiguous, unlike the annoyingly common xx/zz/YY formats.

It's only unambiguous if you recognise it as ISO8601 and know what the format of ISO8601 is. Unfortunately I don't often have my "Every ISO standard ever made... for dummies" with me.

I've never seen a YYYY-DD-MM date. For a start, it would make even less sense than mm/dd/yyyy.

This is why I like writing dates like "Jan. 15, 2010." It's unambiguous as to what it refers to, and when read literally is an acceptable way of saying the date. Now I just need to get into the habit of actually writing dates like that...

I typically like YYYY-MM-DD since you can sort the dates alphanumerically and it'll be in chronological order. The worst dates are written as 02/08/04 - you can't tell the format just by looking at it.

I'd been in the habit of writing dates as 'dd/mm/yy' and actually writing the format after it.

As in: 02/03/04 (dmy). I feel sort of relieved to learn of an ISO standard date format. Informative post, Owen

I do this for file names, but use "Mon. dd, yyyy" for typing/writing/non-file-names. Of course, I personally don't often give files date-based names, but it's happened a bit more recently.

yeah dd/mm/yyyy is what we use in France, but it seems some small countries on the american continent use some other format that makes it confusing... plus / is not usable in filenames usually...
