I am looking for free software that allows me to use my computer as an answering machine.
What I want to beable to do is have it speak a different greeting message based on the caller's number. Caller id or caller screening whatever you call it.

I have a V.92 fax/voice/data modem in my computer. <-came from a dell dimension 8100

I would also like the ablity to control how much minutes each call can leave or have some way of regulating the space alot to each caller's answer.

No one so far can provide me with a link to a free software download. Just throwing this thread out their hopefully somebody on this forum has a clue/answer.

I definitely don't want a trial version because I want to beable to install it and use it forever without an of the functionality missing.

Their should be software to use this V.92 modem for answering calls. I use to use it for faxing and way back in the day for dialup internet.

Have a look at this: Mgetty + Sendfax. From the Freshmeat description you can use it as an advanced answering machine and even set up a voice menu system.

This depends on the operating system you use, and how much you value your freedom.. if you're using Windows, you'll find a boat load of answering machine programs.

Most modern systems including modems use either proprietary PCI cards, or cheaper add-ons to the sound card.

The PCI cards are often dumb devices, i.e: Winmodems.. all logic is in the driver, often binary-only for Windows or Linux (..vendor supplied).

Sound card extensions are also dumb, requiring complex software to emulate a modem.

ISA(..serial) or USB modems with "vgetty" would be a possible solution, another would be finding one of those PCI cards that appear as serial devices.

Thanks , I have this older computer that I don't know what os to through on it yet.
It has a V.92 soft modem in it (data/fax/voice). It original had windows 2000 or Xp runing on it.
Now I am thinking of putting some linux distro on it. But I don't want to lose the ability to use this modem. I know softmodems are os specific in some cases. And finding a linux driver for it can be hard if not impossible.

I still want the ability to fax, answering machine , ...etc with it.

The software on the links you provided looks good. But I am hopeing they have the proper linux drivers ,...etc for my modem. Most new linux distro should have it if not then I probably won't find one anyway.

I was think on installing ubuntu.
But maybe their is a better disto for a machine with 512 mb of ram , 75 gig's of harddrive
intel pentium 4,...etc

Just want all the functonality of the newer linux os's (such as bluetooth , irc software , latex editors , ftp server , smtp server , internet radio streaming stuff ,...etc ). Maybe knoppix is a better choice or slackware ,....etc

Your input would be nice. Note I haven't installed anything on it since I only want to install something if I know completely that it will work with the V.92?

Note also the V.92 modem is PCI based not hard wired to the mobo so maybe it is more os portable?
