but what should i use??
openSUSE, or some other Linux flavor??

also, i've lately heard a lot about PC-BSD.
is it worth it??

PC-BSD is just FreeBSD with some extra packages installed by default, so it is worth it. If you want to get hacking in FreeBSD's kernel, I'd recommend Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System and The Design and Implementation of the 4.4 BSD Operating System. I also have heard Designing BSD Rootkits is quite good.

*BSD != Linux. While the two kernels share certain characteristics, they are developed independently. Not everything you'll read in a Linux book will apply to the BSD kernel, and vice versa.

And of all the Linux distributions available, SuSE is probably the worst choice possible if you want to learn how Linux works. In SuSE, many things work in a very SuSE way, if you get my drift. Binary distributions easily take it personally when you start hacking the internals, and of them all, SuSE is among the touchiest.

For peeking into the internals of a Linux system, I'd strongly suggest Gentoo. For a desktop, I'd recommend Linux Mint. But there is nothing I would recommend SuSE for.

@solar - i see what you mean. openSUSE does sometimes act weirdly. now, what would you choose between gentoo and mint?? i used mint about a year back (i think it was mint daryna), and i liked the way things got done without a hassle.

As per above sentiments:
Gentoo++;
SuSE >>= 1;

In fact, gentoo is what made me actually use linux instead of some fancy wizard.

But don't just follow the Handbook, open your mind, be more creative, I would even start with stage1 (for it being more interesting).

I have to agree with Solar here; BSD is not Linux.The two OSes have similar origins,but *BSD went to the server rooms,and Linux(mostly) went to the desktop,although both can be used in server and desktop environments.Indeed,some people(possibly some here! ) use *BSD as their desktop OS.

Concerning Solars last sentence, plenty of people use SuSE.Who uses Linux Mint?? Use Ubuntu or Fedora!

Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu,so i don't really get people using that; although Ubuntu is based on Debian.
