Is that sarcasm too? Surely the virus scanner simply picked up on the fact that kernel.bin is a boot sector and could therefore be a boot sector virus (does anyone write those anymore?), especially as it is likely that kernel.bin directly accesses hardware.

Sorry if your solution was meant to be a joke - my brain won't be switched on for another 2 hours or so this morning

I was going to write my kernel in XML but my XML compiler doesn't support inline assembly

Who needs inline assembly when you can use a CDATA section and just write out the hex opcodes for everything.

I got this false alarm a few days ago on part of the fresh IDE for fasm and sent in a sample as a suspected false alarm. Guess what? It came back as confirmed malicious. I'm not sure the guys over at Avira know what they're doing.

Yeah, I'm still looking for a decent all-in-one suite (I'm too lazy to install individual parts) and the only decent ones I had 'till know were Eset Smart Security and Avira. Both were trials though, so I couldn't keep using those. The reason the other security suites are sucky is because they are all hyperactive; they show me a popup, I press "Remember My Decision" and "Allow Access" and BAM I get about 5 other messages on the same subject.

I guess this is what you get if you put Avira on extra-detection mode thingy .

I use AVG Free Edition on all my computers, and I recommend it to anybody who asks me. I always keep the latest installer on my USB flash drive, just in case.

I agree with Jack Scott - since I began using AVG I have not had any problems with viruses or the like.

It's also extremely light and I see no performance change when running it (heck, I was playing video games and didn't realize there was a virus scan in the background, and lost no performance on my game).
