Impressions on everyone here

Hi. What do you think of everyone here (meaning me too)? I'm not talking about their personalities (not trying to start flames, lol), but about their knowledge in OS/software development. Who's answers count the most to you and why? I'll write my own impressions as soon as I get the change to type some more but I'm curious what everyone else has to say in the meanwhile.

PS: I can already see Brendan being mentioned dozens of times :P

First off, Brendan is the oddly-funny, resident Mr. Helpful™.
Combuster is the mod with the attitude-filled responses (that are really good for you in the long run!)
inflater is the crazy and a little sadistic one of the group. Similar to piranha, who's just a little crazy.
01000101 is one of our Resident Networking Wizards™ and the Long Mode Master™.

Definitely true. I remember seeing a post where it was suggested that he writes a book on osdev. If he did, I'm pretty sure we wouldn't need the wiki or the forums.

Woot!!

I think Mr. E is the one who is really using his OS for something other than a hobby, from what I know.

Of course, Brendan knows everything.

Overall, many people here know stuff, or are good at some specific things. There are several people who still qualify as noobies, and there are many people who are in between.

And there's definitely a diff between "n00b" (someone who refuses to learn and ends up wasting a few megs of MySQL space with their account(s) and post(s)) and "new guy" (new to the "trade" of OS dev but is willing to learn.) cotton509 is a n00b, GhostXoPCorp and anyone else new here is a new guy/gal.

I've thought about this for a while, decided I wasn't going to do it, but changed my mind.

I vote for a pre-emptive thread lock. This is bound to degenerate into an easily avoided flame war.

You know what quok. I hate you. *flame*

Now its not pre-emptive :D

How can we just lock a thread because it *might* be a breeding ground for trolls? That's like hitting someone just because they *might* hit you. Should it get out of hand, I'm sure the mods will take care of it. In the meantime, this thread has been trashed with all of these off-topic posts.

Hopefully something can be 'hacked' out of this thread...

hmm interesting topic. I'm not generally someone that publicly judges people, so I'm (for the most part) going to just post the good things and I'll withhold my comments about a select few. =) (also, just because I didn't put your name here doesn't mean you're that select few, it means my memory is failing me more than normal  ).

Brendan: excellent source of info and seems to always either know the information off the top of his head, or will actually take the time to do some research for either clarities sake or completeness in general.

Combuster: a little mouthy and (at first glance) rude, but there is almost always gold in the posts, and sometimes that gold is the statements telling the OP to RTFM or the like. I have no problem with the occasional kick-in-the-@$$ if it's honestly for the best.

TroyMartin: quite helpful with real-mode stuff. I've been stuck plenty of times on BIOS interrupts and had to call upon his experience with them to find the answer.

Dex: very helpful in general and I have been able to extract a decent amount of information from him about networking code as well which is a rarity around here.

Alboin: ... makes really good points about thread locking. =) and is (from what I've seen) very helpful and respected.

Solar: dismissing his lack of presence recently (or I'm just not on at the same time), he is almost always an excellent source of information and (like Brendan) will work 1:1 with someone to work through an issue.

JamesM: anyone who makes such highly regarded tutorials on extremely complex subjects gets two thumbs up from me.

Cotton509:

I'm probably forgetting people but once I think of them I'm sure I'll edit/post.

There's been precedent.

For my impressions

Brendan - God. WORSHIP HIM, YOU :)

Solar & Candy - More or less gone, but pros on programming languages and software architecture

Alboin - Dark wizard - speaks in riddles about weird potions and sencha but still able to land back on earth and get the message across

Inflater - The guy running around like mad exhilarated about his next project. Also the type that would run onto the street shouting EUREKA before being run down by a car. (or electricity)

Colonel Kernel - The one thinking outside the box and keeping an open mind in pretty much everything. Goes to some length to convert people to the Right Thing.

Mr. E - The one that does not need to land back on earth.

Jack Scott - Guru in the making, shame he is not around most of the time.

GhostXoPCorp - Guy who tries to look like a genuine newbie but systematically does not take good advice while claiming that he will.

Brynet-Inc - Domesticated troll. Friendly unless provoked. Saves some work when looking for kernel source.

And I probably missed a few... Or couldn't think of anything unique to describe them.

Ok, here's mine:

Brendan: guru esp. in hardware  (oh, and he really likes long posts, but that's ok with me)
Solar: knows his stuff better than most people, esp. on languages
Combuster: a bit rude sometimes but people usually deserve it :)
neon: knows theory on some really important topics
01000101: networking guy :)
Colonel Kernel: open and up-to-date on many new techniques
Alboin & piranha: these guys always always seem to post together on all posts I've seen  I couldn't figure out much about their knowledge but they seem to know Linux's ways
Inflater: sometimes helpful, somewhere between newbie and non-newbie
Tory Martin: same as Inflater and he really likes to post a lot
LoseThos: kind of arrogant but he's not really a newbie
GhostXoPCorp: newbie
bewing: really knows a lot of stuff on harware
Brynet-Inc: Combuster couldn't have said it better

That's all I can think of for now. Hope I didn't offend anyone :?

EDIT: oh... and chase... don't know much about his knowledge as he rarely visists :)

If anybody was, is or will be offended with this topic, then you don't have a sense of humor!

Well, maybe it sounds a bit as I am a newbie in OSdev, but that's just because I don't post much in the os development forum, I tend to code on my own. But that's because I code in a really different way, and most questions in the OSdev section are regarding things I don't implement (multitasking, paging, etc).

Heh... and they always called me a geek, especially "computer geek" in the middle/grade school. :) We're all "computer geeks" here, that's for sure.
Or "a mad scientist who doesn't have the fear of death".

Mine impressions:

Brendan - The real computer geek and he can always answer to any of your questions.
JamesM - A bit mouthy too, but he has knowledge and some english humor.
Brynet-Inc - Agree with Combuster. Anti-Windows posix propaganda number one, but also with the know-how. And he likes to inform us about the newest released graphic card specifications and documents, which nobody from us will use. :D
Troy Martin - Cheerful guy, likes to post a bit more - and seems to have no coder's blocks. :)
01000101 - The person who liked to use ecstasy in 1969, the year when he had his first sex on his favorite position (69). But he seems to have high-level networking knowledge and he does os development for commercial appliance, altough we haven't seen any screenshots. :( Altough I know his OS has a command line with green text color. :P
Alboin - the magic stalker.

Regards
inflater

I'm touched, I've been complemented and insulted.. often in the same sentence.

Combuster - tolerates beginners with variable levels of hostility.. i.e: he's clever.
quok - relatively humorous, knowledgeable.. OFW nut, fellow scifi fan.
Inflater - quite annoying, demonstratively young.. undoubtedly naive.
01000101 - prior script kiddie; now a suit.. slightly delusional about the usefulness of his project.
Brendan - a walking/talking encyclopedia.. he's quite opinionated about Unix/POSIX though.. lost any respect I had for the man.
LoseThos - religious oddity, intolerable.. 3 fries short of a happy meal.. wacko.

Nobody else is on my radar... ;)

If I offend anyone here.. get over it; quok already requested that this thread be locked.. 8)

People i like most in the forums,
(1) Solar ( Martin ) -- Good guy , I do not agree with him entirely
(2) Colonel Kernel ( Bruce ) -- Good guy , I do not agree with him enitirely either
(3) Dex ( .. ) -- Good guy , i do not agree with him fully

They ( 1 & 2) even have helped in issues regarding my carrier as well :D . I will keep their advices in my heart . All the usual members of the forum are very good and helpful as well . Please , instead pointing towards the bad guys just praise the fellows who are good .

I am a moron , my opinions does not matter however ... . I do not like the concept of RTFM and STFW . These geeks should understand there are less geeky fellows like me hanging around and should be considerate to us . In order to write good software you should be considerate to customers . As a part of community service , I was teaching basic computer science (in fact basic computer usage ) to some people . Now I truly realize that one should be considerate towards users.
