OpenTTD

Well, I'm bored and thought I'd post here with something a bit unusual...

Me and a friend played around 16 hours straight TTD, which is a REALLY long time to be playing the same game. Anyone done anything similar before?

We got so bored we were able to do something like... this...

This is literally a transport hub between several cities that are too far apart for conventional means of transport (ie, not building an island :/).

EDIT: That site looks interesting. I prefer to play with people I know though - me and a mate join a TeamSpeak server I run and control our transport empire. Far easier than using text, and we end up with a lot of power. The inevitable rickrolls and spamming yakety sax over the mic are worth the co-ordination ability!

Note we didn't just build on the island....we MADE the island. Well, I did, at least.

"We have too much money"
"I know, lets make an island! =D"
"Please don't"
"Too late!"

You have not played OpenTTD till you've played with OpenTTD coop. Seriously.

Their networks can be insanely complicated - and then you get as complicated (but awesome) things as "SML" - or "Shift Mainlines", which is the most insane contraption, but there is no other way to shoehorn 500 trains down a 3 track wide loop mainline.

Perhaps it's telling of my sanity that I helped invent SML :s

I'm the one in our games who develops the complicated train networks. I think the best one had over 7 tracks and way too many signals to keep the traffic moving smoothly. I love the challenge of trying to run several trains on one track, but that's compounded by wanting to run more than one train per track in a multi-track system where trains need to change tracks to reach different destinations.

Let's just say, I've had many "tear my hear out" moments where 5 trains end up facing each other and can't go anywhere because of each other - the ultimate catch-22.

I'll try out the coop sometime, I have a lot of spare time at the moment...

Congratulations -- you've recreated the UK rail network :-)

Love to play OpenTTD but I don't think the original TTD files are legal to distribute freely anymore :( Was such a good game.

LOL
I was just looking around for a game to play, and found OpenTTD, and know this :)
This is a sign! I'm sure! WHen i get home i'll install it a give it a try ;)

But... what about the graphics, as Troy said, I've read that you need the original game files, but there is/was a work to build new GPLed graphics. How is that work going?

There are sites that distribute the old graphics still. I'm not sure when they'll have finished their GPL'd versions.

Ha! Found a copy at http://www.transporttycoon.net/ and just got the game installed. Matt, Shady, you guys do multiplayer? Should probably run through the tutorial, haven't played in a while.

Troy, we're in GMT+10, but I'm up for multiplayer once you've got the basics out (and if you're still awake at that time). PM me.
