I was wondering if there is a website like newegg.com or tigerdirect.com that sells x86/SPARC/POWER computer parts and/or UNIX operating systems (AIX,HPUX). I am probably going to be buying a IBM or HP UNIX server soon and wanted to know if there is a way to home-build one of those systems by buying individual new parts besides having to buy straight from the manufacturer? I am not interested in refurbishing sites btw (i've gone to enough of those).

The only site I have found so far (and it doesnt do individual parts) is CDW.

Although I'm sure you have a good reason, I feel compelled to ask why you would use AIX/HP-UX?

for HP-UX, because it's the only OS that would actually work on some machines (including my HPPA box).

I am also going to be purchasing just about every likely corporate server out there to conduct testing with. I am soon to be invested in again except with a much larger amount of money, therefore, in order to test interoperability with true UNIX systems and setups I need to physically have them to test with.

Although I don't know much about the platform, I believe OpenBSD supports HPPA.

I like ebay for cheap old products, not brand new rack server technology.
Getting scammed/cheated on a $100 items is painful, but not the end of the world... getting scammed/cheated on a 1-10k product is a little harder to handle.

btw, I've been searching for more products on manufacturer sites, and I must say that HP's eConfigure is the absolute worst thing I have ever gone through.

My business deals in used/refurb computer equipment, so I get a lot of trade magazines. Some of the "advertisers" deal in new equipment of all the types you mentioned. This is a link to one of the trade magazines I've used most:

You might want to get copies of the magazine (although they do tend to stack up, and they keep sending them to you FOREVER). The mag is free, of course. Or you could just look through the website -- as far as I know, all the magazine advertisers also get advertisements on the website. HTH

I know, and so does linux. However, neither supports the specific model I have because of the proprietary chipset. In all cases, the kernel locks up at some point during startup.

I subscribed to that magazine and have looked around the site. navigation is quite difficult to actually get anywhere useful.

I think I've come to the conclusion that there are basically no newegg-like websites that deal with 'new' ia64/parisc/power/sparc/alpha parts for assembling homebrew servers.
