Hey, im new to this website, and ive been looking for a place to share the OS My friends and i have created. now in theoy it is still in testing stages but ive spent month onthis since our debugging phase and now use it on 4 computers in my hous out of the 5 here. so i was hoping hat some of you would like to try it out and give some notes. Ill give ya a little insight about our operating system. ok so we have no name for it, but its revolutionary, its a customizable system like no one has ever seen before, comes in 5 different versions, gaming, arts, programming, office, and home. now each version as a initial startup that takes longer tha most but its worth it. on initial login you will have to choose your UI design, or customize your own, No you will not need a external program to make it the way you want. it has thousands of looks already embedded. anyways, it has a integrated spyware/antivirus demolisher which is secondary setup after the OS is loaded. its not a MS based system yet it can run just about every game out there. hightened security, with the ability to tweak it to your needs(advanced uses only) we think its a great system and plan on doing more fixes to it but are looking for some help. IDK what i can offer you yet but ill hink of something, Oh yeahand we have a motto, "Together we can crush microsoft." HAHA SWEET>

How far ahead are you, and how many years do you have to devote? Cause thats gonna take a while.
Crushing Microsoft is unlikely.
Are you developing a kernel as well? Because thats much more important than the actual interface.
Good luck, you'll need it.

yeah ill post a few UI pics from our media package that im testing, but the UI was the last thing on our list, everything is top priority, hence why i need people to help test it.

That sounds like the words of an overly optimistic manager who doesn't have any experience in project management.
Basically, you need priority so you can divide your goal in to manageable milestones, which can then be furthered divided down in to tasks which take place in some sort of order (one task could make several tasks easier, another task may be dependent on this tasks).
So basically, a priority-less project like you're implying this is, or a project where everything is given equal priority, would really only work if you had infinite human resources working in parallel on every subsection of every section of every feature of component of your operating system.
Good luck.

To code a Dos clone, will take 5 years to do, working everyday, how long do you think your project will take ?.
No OS will crush M$, technology will move on, so M$ will be less important, (eg: google is not a OS).
First rule's about OS Dev
1. No one will join your project.
2. No one will want to use it.
If any of these are important to you do not start OS Dev, as you will be disappointed.

Dex: You should add:
3. No one will answer your questions.
Now those rules are complete and very accurate for this place in time.

But i disagree with you about number 3., anyone that ask a resolvable question, will get a answer or directed to the answer.
Just look at the forum and see how many people take the time to answer questions.

I disagree with your first point as well:
It is UNLIKELY that someone will join your project, but it has happened to others in the past. It just takes a truely revolutionary idea with real goals and the ability to show people that your OS is worth investing time into.
Also, your motto sucks. I usually don't put things so bluntly, but I think it is a motto that will only drag you down if you ever wish to get help on this project. Having a core idea that is based around crushing another implementation is almost always bound to fail, it is better to think of your OWN ideas and take a seperate path, then to walk the beaten path and try to extend it.

Antivirus? I can't imagine where the virus come from. Maybe your OS compatible with Windows virus or you write it your own.

My NO ONE will join you, is in the above case, that you have nothing started, but ideas.
I myself have had other 30 people add to my OS and hundreds of members of our forum, but other than the originals members, these came much later in DexOS's Dev life.
PS: How many have joined you ?.

I disagree, because I have asked many questions here that where resolvable, but I received wrong or no information every time. I cannot recall one post I have made out of over 200 where someone from here actually answered it. I was directed to info, but if I had questions about it, I hear crickets (no one cares to help). I have had a PCI question waiting to be answered and I was watching it and I saw Combuster and other mods look at it and leave and you would think that a simple PCI question would be easy to answer by one of the more seemingly knowledgeable mods, so I am a bit disenchanted by the blatant lack of interest shown to me by some of the mods here.
I have given this great thought and I see why they say this is the place to *start*, because in essence it is, but it isn't the place to finish. Once you get past the basics, you are on your own, are you not? I feel that this is true because it is likely that at some point you are just as far along as they; if not farther. Luckily there are truly knowledgeable people on this planet and they are in groups, such as expert-exchange or a news-group and they will help beyond what osdev.org can or will; why is this a fact? You tell me, I assume I have reached outside the scope of this forum? Am I wrong?
You wonder why there are so many trolls? These are the ones you have discouraged. I am fortunate enough to be able to track down resources and understand them else I would have given up like many others who came here before and after I. Look at the topics now, have we become so bored of each other that we now post nonsense and flame questions if not fully prepared. I don't even think the mods (those supposed to be most knowledgeable) are even trying anymore. How long until this place dies from the lack of interest, I wonder.
Like I said, not ONE question I have ever asked here has been answered fully nor correctly, not one. I have to pick through the BS to figure out that what was given as an answer was incorrect or incomplete, and I shouldn't have to do that. I have to answer my own questions, so what is the point of the forum at all? You really should consider getting rid of this useless resource. thanks
OP: You only fail when you fail to try, so I urge you to keep trying, but not here for you will only waste time. Good Luck!
