top level domain stupidity...

I don't know if you read about this, but I think it's pretty stupid and a waste of resources, as well as increasing the complexity of browsing the web to allow any top level domain names...
There's no point in it, I don't think anybody has ever felt limited by our current system...

P.S. here's a link to an article on it in case you don't know about it yet: http://www.smh.com.au/news/web/rule-cha ... 19636.html

I agree that it is a somewhat stupid move.

Who needs those type of names? I also heavily agree that it will undoubtedly force established corporations to buy unecessary domains just to make sure no one else can steal their spotlights.

Exactly, I don't see how there are any upsides to this decision..., except, some demanding idiot can have any domain name he want's, down to the top level domain name...
It's a waste of money and time...
Also, I have a feeling that the whole DNS system might have to be re-written to accommodate this stupid decision...

In theory, an infinite number of new domain names could be born, which would prove a boon for ICANN because it would receive payment for each one.
It sounds like a win-win. What's the problem? It's not like they're censoring your internet. (Well, at least if you don't live in China or France)

Those two things aren't even related...
Because people can have different domain names doesn't fix the fact that the number of IPs is starting to be exceed by demand...

That article wrote:With the stock of available web addresses under the current IPv4 protocol set to run out by 2011, ICANN has been under pressure to find a solution for burgeoning demand.
What the heck? An example of a misinformed researcher... the shortage of IPv4 addresses is entirely unrelated to domain names.

Personally, I don't think it's required... if anything, it will cause chaos.. organizations and companies fighting to ensure nobody buys up their name.

even though it is unrelated it is very true. I want to implement IPv6 soon in my OS.

If the 'infinate' domain name thing goes through, that one company that dishes them out is going to be beyond wealthy.

Seams like the only possible logical explanation to me...
