I watch the cricket during the Australian summer. It would be nice to go see an IPL game... but that's a lot of money.

I used to play and watch cricket quite a lot (been to see a few Ashes matches and Tests at the Oval and Lords), but kind of got out of it at university.
There's quite a nice village team around where I live now. If I ever have time, I may get back in to it.
Cheers,
Adam

Cricket? That's the one where elderly people walk around the lawn knocking balls through tiny goals, isn't it?
Or do you mean the one losely related to baseball, only that the players look even more like complete dorks and the scoreboard is even more cryptic?
*ducksandruns*
(Disclaimer: I'm almost 100% ignorant of Cricket rules and in fact never saw a live game. I'm just trying to make some fun of it, so don't take me seriously.

If it's any consolation the ashes matches I saw were, of course, always won by you guys.

If you refer to me, cricket isn't a popular sport in Germany at all. And as for actually spending money on a gameday ticket, I rather go support my home town in soccer.

I normally watch Australia play (but only on the TV). I also normally watch the 20/20 games as well (although still prefer the 5 day games and 50 over day-nighters).
IPL (although I haven't had a chance to watch a game yet), looks like it's going to be a good series - heard on the news that someone scored 30 off of Andrew Simons (a good bowler, although Brett Lee is better) in one over.

..scored 30 off of Andrew Simons [...] in one over.
And you wonder why no-one outside the Commonwealth gets excited on cricket, when other games are won 2-1 or 42-38 or somesuch?

Well the average score for cricket is around 250 for 50 overs. 20 over matches are usually (depending on which teams) 150. The game I was talking about finishing score was:
Deccan Chargers 142/8 - after 20 overs
Delhi Daredevils 143/1 - after 13 overs

Austalia: 3/501 dec. & 4/351 dec.
England: 101 & 86
Tell me that isn't a cool score card. You just wish you had so many numbers to make statistics out of.
All hail Richie Benaud.

Do you recognize the problem for non-fans?
What does the /8 and /1 mean? Why did they win "by overs" instead of by scoring higher (143 vs. 142)? Why does the one with
less overs win?
It's contrary to virtually every other "scoring" sport out there. Or perhaps only very poorly explained.
From first paragraph of "Soccer" on Wikipedia:
It is a football variant played on a rectangular grass or artificial turf field, with a goal at each of the short ends. The object of the game is to score by manoeuvring the ball into the opposing goal. [...] The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins.
I tried the same for Cricket, attempting to show you how complicated the thing is. The problem was it would blow this post all out of proportion.
I have the feeling Cricket might be real fun to watch. But it also seems like too much hassle to get through all the fine print just to have a good time. Especially while my home town's soccer team playes Germany's third-highest league.
