Wisdom Teeth

Post by AndrewAPrice »

I had 4 wisdom teeth removed yesterday. They didn't come fully though, so the surgeon had to cut them out and stick up the holes.

I had it done in a hospital yesterday. I was mostly worried about the anesthetics, although they weren't as bad as I thought. Your arm goes really cold where they inject it and it spreads through out your body.. and then you're lieing their with your eyes closed thinking about stuff and decide to open them and you suddenly realise your throat and gum hurts and you're in a different room.

The booklet I was given that says the do's/dont's after surgery says discomfort may continue for up to 14 days.. Christmas in 4 days  I guess no Christmas lunch and dinner for me

And my cheeks and bottom lip are puffed up and I look like Richard Nixon.
My OS is Perception.

Going under reminded me of watching video games freeze and screw up the screen. I remember the cold too, it was awkward since it was not shockingly cold... felt almost like my bones were replaced by icicles.

As for the pain, the first couple of days were not bad... but that is easy to say with oxycodone at the helm. It seemed like the pain peaked a week after surgery, and started to slowly subside.

I don't think I got dry sockets, but I have seen people who have and it looked like a miserable condition. You may not have to sacrifice Christmas dinner, but be sure to flush your mouth out even more than usual.

I had mine removed about 7 years ago now.

Same for the hospital but I only got a local sedation. Was a lot better - the sedation lasted for about 10 minutes after they'd completed and I could just walk home and eat the evening after. It still hurt like hell obviously and stuff got stuck in the holes (so I had to keep cleaning them - which is annoying but doable). They'll grow mostly shut in a short while - if the doctor didn't close them for you.

At least you don't have a memory of somebody in your mouth with a huge pair of pliers with cracking noises.

Run for president? ;-)

May continue up to 14 days means it could be over in 2 days and if it does take more than 14 days you should see the doctor.

I had the same thing done a couple of years ago - all 4 at once, under full anaesthetics. Good thing too, because two of them wouldn't budge, and the doc had to shatter them, pulling out the pieces... took 1.5 hours instead of the scheduled 40 minutes, good thing I was passed out for the duration. ;-)

Two weeks after that, I donned the helmet and played football again, although my gums were still swollen... completely crazy from today's perspective, but you have to be if you want to play defense.
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.

That's a very good thing knowing what I did. Mine went perfectly and I felt the fourth quite a bit. If that had taken them twice as long, I'd have screamed.

Glad you handled the anethesia ok. I didn't handle it so good. Healthwise I came out ok, but apparently I was swearing and saying really profane things. Of course my parents were the ones taking care of me. Apparently I freaked out some poor girl who was next in line after me.
Thanks for all the fish.
