I think that the only reason that AMD is lasting is that its financially floted by its revenue from ATI. Im not a particular fan of either intel or AMD but i wandering what you guys thought.
It just that i can't see how AMD is going to take out a product that can compete against intel's.

AMD has a history of doing great work, from their speedy 586-line.. to their current AMD64 revolution.

In fact, Intel itself cloned AMD's work on a 64bit extension of the x86.. ;)

AMD just recently announced plans to release a lot of technical specifications for ATI graphics cards, Which will likely increase GPU sales (Especially from members in the Open Source/OSDev communities..)

In fact, I'll likely buy ATI cards in the future if enough documentation is available..

AMD isn't going anywhere.... sorry to disappoint you. 8)

exactly the only thing that is keeping it alive is its profits from ATI, and I can't see anything in its near future that will be able to outperform Intel products so it may just drop its CPU line and focus on GPUs.

They make a lot of profit in the embedded CPU market with their Geode processors, and their server oriented Opteron line.

Seriously, Stop making uninformed assumptions... ;)

I know many people who buy AMD products, I myself own several members of the Athlon line - Which are in my opinion quite reliable.

Your right but they can't compete in the desktop market though...

IIRC, a couple of years ago before the release of Core 2 Duo, everyone was saying how great the Athlon 64's were compared to Intel's Prescott core. I for one would not have bought an Intel at that point. Now, I probably wouldn't buy anything other than a Core 2 Duo.

Things change and it may be that given a few years, the tables will have turned again - which is good, because it keeps both AMD and Intel on their toes.

Cheers,
Adam

I had an AMD, CPU it was unreliable.
AMD is probably better now though.

To A-OS: Do you mean reliability wise or power wise?
Reliability wise, AMD are going to release there new Barcelona core anytime soon, but not long ago on an article posted on the 10th of september, 2007, at which time AMD if they are planing to release should already have perfectioned chips, that a Barcelona proc. died after testing:

(Yes, ok its a server version of Barcelona...)

I have an AMD X2 4400+ and at the time i bought it Intel did not have a CPU that was nearly as good and it still functions very well. Nowadays if i would buy a system it would be Intel because they have the upper hand now. This is what people call progress. And in the future probably AMD will be on top again..

They may still recover, but its still quite bad how a proc they are releasing now can't out perform clock for clock a one year old proc

I'm pretty sad....

I have an Athlon64. It works. I have no problems. I would be just as satisfied with an Intel. Personally, I don't have preference between the two.

I only have a slight bend towards AMD because they have that "Hey! I'm made in Dresdon! Look at me! I'm not Intel! I'm different! Variety, even! Want a drink? I'm so different and nice! (*cough* But not really *cough*)" feel. 8-[
