Guess what OS is on the picture :)

Well; here it is
--
--
Some curiousities:
1. Opening the recycle bin would cause general protection fault in CAB32
2. The OS was unable to show contents of a ordinary floppy disk.
3. It included cheapo text editor called "WritePad", the predecessor of WordPad i think...
4. This OS included a program called WinPad.exe, eh, Win3.1's cardfile.exe in "modern" style? Nobody knows...
5. Some programs were 16-bit and 32-bit versions, for example Clock.exe and Clock32.exe. The look-and-feel design was the same in both versions.
6. In the windows directory you found a program called dialer.exe.
No, it's not a virus, but a modem dialing program. I remember this from Windows 95, not sure if this exists in Win98.
7. Switching to 800x600 mode in MS VPC 2007 in this OS (S3 graphics card emulation) would result in corrupted image in it.
8. BSOD is alive !!!
--
Also I have never seen this kind of BSOD in neither Win9x nor WinNT/2000/Me/XP... This seems like kernel fault, because this BSOD was followed by another endless loops of BSODs, "exception 0D", and so forth.
9. What will happen if you press CTRL+ALT+DEL?
--
It seems Microsoft didn't like their users rebooting...
As long there are Google, Yahoo, Altavista to help you I'm sure you've guessed the OS name already

//EDIT 2: The "thank you" goes to some members of the open source community.

It's obviously either an early Windows NT or 9x beta/alpha..
You're aware it's illegal to use them right? might be a good idea to stop flaunting your illegal activities on these forums.

What's illegal? Posting screens of a closed source OS and examining the applications how it everything was put together, was illegal?
No, I do not want you to print here the whole Canadian law, please.

The means by which you probably got it is illegal. Microsoft does not distribute beta OS's to the public, and therefore, you most probably got the disk image from a download site on the web, which is, illegal, because it is illegally copying copyrighted data. Copyright infringement's not nice, eh?

What does it matter when Microsoft would not have earned money anyways, since they don't sell this OS?
Judging by the looks it's Windows Chicago, but I didn't google it.

So, the one-time test of Microsoft Windows Chicago, abandonware, for private use, is illegal?
I knew you would say this bullshit. But to fullfill your needs I have deleted it, so you would be happy I am not posting anything "illegal" now.
I see here a lot of these open source maniacs... Good luck with your "open source", preachers
Open source didn't work, does not, and will not work!
MessiahAndrw, the one part of Doctor Who you've downloaded is "illegal". Watch out, because here lies the RIAA!
//EDIT: Craze Frog was first
Yeah its Windows Chicago build 71, or at least
it was.
It's version from 1993, and when you compare that Windows 3.1 was released in 1992-1993, ... Windows 95 was already in development

I don't know if the pictures are actually illegal or not...
..I wasn't saying that, anyway. I was simply pointing out the activity of copyright infringement itself is illegal.

Open source didn't work, does not, and will not work!
Proprietary software will not work without these copyright laws that you dismiss.

Yeah, I downloaded it, and installed it in VPC, so what? I just wanted to let you guess the OS, not to guess where I downloaded it, because it totally doesn't matter for you.
As Craze Frog said, Microsoft didn't earned cash from these products, so... ? And they are, like, more than 14 years old! Who will use them anyway?
And, for God's sake, 3/4 of computers in the government (Slovakia, Germany, Hawaiian Islands, it doesnt matter) are using pirated software. "So what?" I say; for example when you would got invited to Bush's mansion, you would surely see what I mean.

Not everybody in the world are earning 2600$ monthly and spending 200 bucks for only a OS; that is not cheap.
I do NOT provide copyrighted material (on CD) for my friends, because I know what fiend can he be, and what could happen to me = distributing copyrighted material IS the copyright infringement. And stealing is a crime.
But in this thread I did not distribute Windows Chicago, and I just tested it just how it works; and I have post the screenshots. That's all.

The law doesn't see it that way. (At least under the Berne Convention.) If you don't like it, try to change it, join the Pirate Party, but don't try to justify abandonware.

for the most part, microsoft DOES distribute its beta's and alpha's for free to beta/alpha testers.. lol. I'm a beta tester, and have tested the many RC beta's of vista and was part of the whister project and have (a about a year and a half ago) tested the server codename 'longhorn' alpha release.
and even then, they don't hand out the entire NT kernel source code.

Justification doesn't have anything to do with the law, and while he obviously did something illegal, so what? Let it be his business as long as it doesn't harm anyone else.

I was more or less commenting on his comment that 'it's more than 14 years old anyway.'

Unfortunately this forum is hosted on American servers, and hence if the federal police decide they don't like what's being discussed Chase is the one who catches the blame. I have a feeling he won't like that.

I'm in total agreeance with pcmattman on this.
One of the mods might want to consider removing this entire topic.
