GIGABYTE ATI Radeon X1550 Graphics Board driver

Post by kenneth_phough »

Just yesterday I bought a GIGABYTE GV-RX155256D-RH ATI Radeon X1550 gfx card for my linux box and found out that AMD ATI's fglrx driver doesn't support Radeon X1550. The supported graphics card list jumped from X1300 to X1600. According to AMD, they say that anything older the 85XX cards are not supported but looking at the list X1300 and X1600 are both up in the list where all the recent gfx cards are. And by logic X1550 should be in between X1300 and X1600. Does anyone know by any chance if Radeon X1550 is fairly old or if their is a linux driver that supports Radeon X1550.
I've googled it, went to many linux forums and found out that there are a fair amount of people out there with the same problem. I know I should have check to see if X1550 was supported on linux  , but looking at the number of articles relating to the same issue, I wonder if AMD's ATI Linux Crew is going to release a driver with X1550 support.

Yours,
Kenneth

P.S. unfortunately i found out that I can return the product cause it was on a clearance sale, sigh.

It's most likely too "new" for the Linux driver Ati releases. They update it once a month with a 3-month delay in "testing and bugchecking it" - so when you buy a new card, you'll have it running 4 months later at the soonest.

Got an X1300 here for sale, if anybody's interested.

Found a solution for Fedora Core 6 and 7 users.
The following is a tutorial by Leigh from the fedoraforum on how to get a ATI Radeon gfx to work. The first post is for FC6 users and the second post is for FC7 users.
