Do you really think anybody has a load of time on their hands and is like "hey I'm smart, I haven't a clue what to do so let's see whether I can find somebody to help for nothing at all" - and especially four of those people?

I rather call that the wrong question. I suggest you read http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html - it will tell you to google, read faq pages and search archives, as well as posting in the right forum.

As for the FAQ: http://www.osdev.org/wiki/What_order_sh ... _things_in

I have had one experience, that I know for sure, which was a guy trying to write a kernel for a college assignment. I think that is a little dishonest when reporting the project for a grade, and might leave that person with some expected skills being in a false state.

The "quick" part is what I figure is weird.

Than go ahead an just do it. Most information you could ever think of in the first month/years is already on the internet. And if you need help with something specific, than ask a concrete question here.
