I am looking for a good free web hosting service that supports server side scripting such as php. Does anyone know of any good free hosting sites? Thanks,

Frank

Thanks for that link, I was looking into some of those. I was just looking to see what other people use. I would sure hate to end of with one that was actually a fake site that was just there to steal my information.

The free one are usually more hassle than they are worth. There are lots of companies that you can host with for less than $10 dollars a month. I don't use their cheap plan but osdev is at www.eleven2.com and there are even cheaper places like http://www.godaddy.com. If it is something to do with open source I think www.sourceforge.net has php support.

I think you should consider paying those 10-50$ a year. I doesnt have to be expensive, and you get so much more.

Anyway, i know severel good free hosts, but they are all danish so i dont supose they are of any interest to you :D

Frank:
What did you have in mind to use PHP for? (I am just curious.)

It isn't really about the hosting, It is more like I want to play around with php files and databases and such. Right now I am trying to set up an apache server on my computer and play around with php with that.

Just a learning experience.

The way to tinker with PHP and do a (little) hosting.

Hmm.. By moving the magical need slider..

[tinkering....<*>.................................hosting]

And of course in agreement with your last post..

Sounds like you are in need of a unused computer to have setup for hosting a website. I assume you have a high speed internet connection and if I am correct then you might be able to be satisfied tinkering with that. Out of experience I would suggest not using such a setup for anything that you intend for others to access reliability unless you feel comfortable that you can keep things running smoothly for should I say twenty-four-seven?

Anyway it does sound like a solution to your tinkering desires at heart here apparently, and can provide a cheap showcase for your friends if you happen to make a neat gadget with PHP or something.

If you have slow internet connection then it might still meet your needs for tinkering, but I imagine not for hosting of any sort.

And if I could move forward to a interesting idea which would be to register for one of those dynamic sub domains that update automatically to reflect your current IP address for kicks and giggles.

See this is where my problem exists, I have dial-up. So I am think that I am just going to set up a php server on my computer and keep it from accessing the internet and just look at my pages though http://localhost. I was just wondering if there were any good free web hosting sites with php support because I didn't know how hard it would be to set up said php server on my computer. But since I already have to apache server set up, i think I will just stick to keeping the pages on my computer and viewing them though localhost.

if you are using windows and just want to play around with php and stuff, you should consider installing WAMP it provides apache, php and mysql in working order (usually).
