It's strange to know that there's no official BSD website (it seems so), and its kernel and applications are not maintained like in kernel.org. Not even is clearly stated whether the full sources are contained in the downlodable ISO's.

From Wikipedia it looks like there is a reliability on derivatives (like distributions? FreeBSD, PC-BSD, etc...), and that the sources are much more smaller tnan those of Linux.

Even the website http://www.bsd.org seems to be just a main page with a list of BSD resources.

Hopefuly its kernel is the very same among the distributions, or else better look for the one that is most complete at the time.

I think each branch controls its own kernel. Yet, this doesn't sound right to me.......

I'm sure Brynet could give you a 12-page detailed report on it, though.

FreeBSD/NetBSD & OpenBSD are all completely different systems, while they all share a heritage at one point.. They are all very unique..

OpenBSD for example has been separate from NetBSD development for more then 10 years now..

Most of the BSD's commonly available are either derivatives of 386BSD or 4.4BSD.. sometimes both..

But you will notice that each kernel differs greatly.. They each are going in very different directions.

So in short.. They don't share the same kernel or libraries.. NetBSD and OpenBSD have semi-recent ancestry so at times tiny patches can be made..

But it's nothing like how Linux is.. Each Linux "distribution" simply uses the same kernel and adds various 3rd party applications..

Each "BSD" group actually works independently.. maintaining their own kernels and libraries (libc etc..)..

But.. The reason why there isn't a "general" BSD website is simply because "BSD" itself isn't a project anymore, It lives on in it's descendants .

(And because when people actively worked on the original BSD system it was in the 70's and 80's.. When websites were likely not as frequent..)
