Jeez, this is getting annyoing.
I said a few weeks ago that I am not here frequently enough anymore to warrant a moderator account. But it looks that I am here often enough to find spam first... so if you still want to have me, I hereby volunteer as "spam buster".

I've already gave chase lots of viable prevention methods, Including a mod that displays a captcha on users first posts.
Must be to busy......

To be quite honest, most of what I do is spam busting. Commonly the first thing I do online is to remove a few topics that contain only spam + 0-3 reactions and then to open the rest for reading.

Believe it or not I have lots of spam filtering stuff already in place. captchas on account creation, email verification on account creation, member lists not including non-active accounts, non-standard form input names, etc. You guys don't even want to see the number of accounts that never get created or the bounced emails that I have to deal with. Spammers suck.
I'm going to evaluate several additional mods that people have mention sometime soon. I got a little busy with buying my first house (I was moving on xmas) but things are getting close to settling down.

some background info you might want to consider:
phpbb's captcha is broken: a decent captcha bot has a good chance (~50% IIRC) of reading it correctly. The rest can be circumvented by an bot that isnt hardcoded to one specific website.
Which probably gives an good indication of
stupid bots around.
IMO It also gives us a place to start: You might try to 'fix' the captcha by asking people to enter the code in reverse order. That should probably reduce the amount of bots getting through page one (and consequently the number of bounced mails).
Apart from that, i must say that spam isnt so much of a problem here compared to some other places i've seen.
