ever hear of a manual virus? some guy told me he gave out a batch file that only printed "delete sys.com or else this virus will destroy your system" it mgiht have nto been sys.com, but i know it was a vital file. it actually worked too. it was in teh days of DOS

Ah, the Hoax Virus... That's funny because it's not exploiting a flaw in the Operating System, but a *flaw in the Operator*!
That's Scoial Engineering, the true basis for hacking.
Seriously, though, those "agents" sound exactly like the kind of virii that I'm interested in. I've heard people mention agents years ago in stuff like OMNI, but they were referring more to independent applications (like web-searchers, before bandwidth made search engines faster, and people also had to use archie and gopher) than viral automata.
Last off, Stephen Wolfram (The Mathematica guy) recently published a massive-@$$ book about how he believes that cellular automata can be used to represent incredibly complex mathematical situations and stuff, so this seems to jive well with the viral AI concepts that are generall touted.
