Just don't mention the war! I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it. ;)

Partially agreeing. It's something you want for your graphics card driver (but just because of lack of information about newer graphics cards due to ati/nvidia's "nice" information policy).
But it's definitly something you don't want for your other driver like floppy, hdd, network, etc...
Is mentioning Hitler some sort of taboo in Germany?
Well, no, not really. But for politicians it might not be a good thing (tm) to do such comparisions. perhaps because they are afraid of the reactions in the other countries... It's generally not very good to have someone in your party that compared Bush with Hitler and then have to do some diplomacy with the USA ;).
But in general mentioning Hitler is not a taboo in Germany. I think the Germans are very well aware of their history, but that might just be my opinion as a german.
But something you really shouldn't do in Germany is wearing nazi symbols or putting your right hand up when greeting someone ;).

I didn't get that one, if it really was one. ???

Fawlty Towers reference, possibly the best scene they did, though it might offend any German viewers that take it too seriously unfortunately.

John Cleese (sp?), playing a hotel manager who is expecting German guests. He's running around telling everyone "don't mention the war", achieving the complete opposite of what he intended: What could have been a perfectly normal stay turns out to be completely awkard.

Like, "don't think of polar bears", and the next two hours you're running around thinking of polar bears every other minute. ;)
