Well... we laughed at the french some time ago, but they don't wrap those funny words with normal words... They speak a different language, whereas flemish people just don't know what's dutch. That's funny.

Well, letz give an example about *german cursing*:

(thats translated: Listen, gosh, if you don't shut the trap immediately, I'll bash you in your face that your head turns around thrice! - not as if it would make much sense to english origins for they have other - better expressions for such a thing)

as for dutch-flemish: I for one couldna say the difference between the tow of thenm even if two native speakers of both language spoke to me.

If you have two words for an object, one of which is dutch and one of which is french, and you use the french word while using a lot of other words from the dutch language, including the dutch grammar, that's wrong.

hesp -> ham
frigo -> koelkast
confituur -> jam

they're such simple words... why do you /have/ to use the french words?

Hesp -> Jambon
Frigo -> R?frig?rateur
Confituur -> Confiture

Only one word that can be derived from French. Frigo could've just as well been from English or an ancient language like Latin or Greek.

You know, this really fascinates me... I mean that Dutch speaking people always tend to "group" on the internet. I've seen it many times on the internet: newsgroups (where they also brutally annexed some groups), private hubs and even on forums... I believe this is already the second "Dutch thread" on this particular forum... From the Flemish viewpoint this seems rather logical, since they pretty much lost Brussel and all that stuff; but for the seemingly non-patriotic Dutch..?

Anyway, regarding my thoughts on the subject: I do not think Flemish is "Old-Dutch" or even funny for that matter... I'd rather think of Afrikaans then... Most of the loan words in Dutch are French, so those couple of extra ones in Flemish doesn't make it "wrong" to use them. It's not like they choose the French words on purpose...

I'm pretty saddened by the fact that this thread somewhat headed to the stupid ol' Dutch-arrogance-vs-Flemish-stupidity-nonsense... Whereas the Dutch here kinda confirmed their stereotype...

Just one thing though: non-patriotic Dutch? Then what's that orange blob you see north of Belgium on satellite pictures?

Brussels isn't really much of a loss. Cities like Luik and Namen would be more of a loss, because they're some of the biggest industry cities in Belgium. Losing Hasselt would mean a gain, although it has alot of industry too. Stevaert's way of running it still makes the whole country lose money for privileges of one city, and the money lost by that's way too much to recuperate with what's gained there. This all's nothing 'bout territory or such. Heck, the most patriotic (and fachistic) political party wants to have Flanders lose alot more ground and become independant. (Btw: this doesn't mean I'm behind that party, just showing we don't care 'bout gaining ground elsewhere because we lose some on another spot)
What I did find a bit annoying, is that they said the language I speak is wrong, simply because it's not the same as they speak and it's categorised under the same language. The official language's built up from the dialect of Den Haag (or Utrecht, I keep messing that up) and as one dialect's different from the other and uses different words, it doesn't make it wrong, less or funny. It just makes it different from what you're used to. This means that Flemish sounding a bit different and using a few different words than our northern neighbours doesn't make us wrong and them right. It doesn't make us right and them wrong either. It just proves the official language hasn't taken over the use of dialects. Those that speak Dutch and not Flemish have the biggest example within themselves, namely Friesland. Nobody even understands those people, but they still speak Dutch (yeahyeah, they want Friesish to become an independant language, but then again, they're fiercely patriotic over their little piece of ground)

Well, i'd have to correct you here: Frisian is in fact the second official language of the Netherlands... So bilingual road signs, Frisian lessons at school, etc. in the Frisian regions...

Something that I really notice is that you do not see that all the things I've said can be applied in two ways. Not only can we laugh at you for using a weird set of words, you can laugh at us too. In the exact same way, we use their language, but with a few very weird words.

The only thing that disappoints me now is that you all did not see that, but instead start using real insults & falsities to "get back" to us. Grow up.
