You don't need books, Patrick! There's more than enough information online, and many of the regulars here have given you links and resources. At the very least, Google around for some C tutorials so that you have a good grasp of the language. That's essential for what you're trying to accomplish.

I feel that you're being overly harsh on the OP. Yes, his "kernel" is extremely simple. Yes, it hasn't progressed much more than the babysteps stage. However, the fact that he hasn't progressed further is IMHO a good thing. He is having difficulty learning the concepts and instead of jumping ahead to a stage where he is out of his depth,he is progressing slowly and [attempting to] learn along the way.

There are plenty of tutorials out there that can "guide" someone through creating a kernel much more advanced than his - mine, Brans, even the wiki babystep to some extent. The fact that he hasn't jumped on the bandwagon and C-P'd all a tutorial's source code is a good thing. Yes, his code may be based on a tutorial. Yes, there may not be many changes from that tutorial. But if he's within his depth, where's the harm in that? We all know Bran's tutorial - we can all spot it and any related code a mile distant - he's never going to succeed in passing off Bran's work as his own, so why not just let him be for the moment.

There are plenty of OSes that come up on the announcements forum that are based, not even loosely, on tutorials. Hell, I've spotted code I've written in several of them. Those aren't pounced on, so why this one?

Finally, to bring my little mini-rant to an end - if you don't find his release impressive, ignore it. It's what I do. It's what I've done up to now when I felt that I must at least put my twopennyworth in. He'll soon get the hint if you all stop swooping down on everything he says like flies to a turd and creating a 5-page topic from the simplest thing! This goes for other newbies too.
