Best Linux distro?
Re: Best Linux distro?
No Linux is best. It's up to you to decide - someone may like gentoo and compilation from sources, someone may like just quick boot up's, GUI, installation from repositaries etc.
I dual-boot XP with Ubuntu and I'm pretty satisfied with ubuntu, but I wouldnt ever move from Windows to Linux.
For those who are using Linux instead of Windows because of it's price tag... there are two possibilities, buy it, or... "get" it.

Why VPC? You know Microsoft, always want to alienate choice, So obviously Linux is going to struggle with VPC (Linux is Microsoft No1 competitor). VirtualBox is a better emulator. I've emulated Ubuntu before (also gentoo, Freebsd, Fedora, Mandriva, and that other bit of <insert word> made from the devil (I think they normally call it Windows, or something weird like that)).Troy Martin wrote:What, in your humble opinions, is the best Linux distro? I'm looking for something to put into VPC to use on a regular basis alongside Windows.
Thanks!
As for which is best, it depends on who you talk to. I prefer Ubuntu for it's simplicity. For you I would recommend Ubuntu.

You like chocolate, I like strawberry. The power of Linux = choice.

So, after passing i8042.noloop as an argument to the kernel in /boot/grub/menu.lst, the mouse works. I'm pretty happy with Ubuntu so far.

You're kidding right? If anyone is the No1 competitor, it is Apple. They at least have a market share of > 1%. I like Linux and all, but it is not a major player just yet, it's numbers are on the rise, but on a slow and gentle rise.B.E wrote: Why VPC? Linux may not be a major player in the desktop space yet, but look at the server space where it's quickly overtaking traditional Unixes like Solaris (which itself is even increasing in market share) while the market share of Windows collapses.01000101 wrote:You're kidding right? Okay, we're a lil off topic here.
So Ubuntu is pretty nice! I think I'm going to download bcc and make it while I play WoW 3.0.2.

A relevant quote: "MMORPGS are like picking your nose. You don't really enjoy it, but you can't stop, and everybody that sees you thinks less of you for it".while I play WoW 3.0.2.
Ironically that happens to be the front-page quote of http://www.wikiforall.net/. Funny how that front-page quote always seems relevant
Edit: It's actually even more ironic that this post is OT. To bring it back on topic, I personally prefer Ubuntu over any other distro. I tried Slackware once and enjoyed how it ran, but I didn't like the lack of a package manager. apt-get rocks .

Its gentoo. More userfriendly than any of the others because there actually is help and documentation.
