Chuck, if you are still here:
You need to learn some C++/C or Pascal and Assembly too.
You can check www.osdever.net as a starting point.
//EDIT 2:
And this forum too , just your idea was a bit unrealistic.
Good luck (without irony now).

I want to build an Operating System, but its not like any operating system to date. It will be super simple. I know I sound like a fool when I say this, but you have to take my word for it, this is revolutionary.
I will not give out any more information, unless you contact me.
I am looking for some developers to make a super simple OS. It will need mouse and keyboard support for v1, and it may get a bit more advanced later on. As I said, this will be a big project.
If you are interested, and want to develop on a particular architecture, we can work with it. The development team will play a huge role in this project, and their opinions will basically build this OS.
This project will build the basis of a company, and trust me, I know marketing inside and out.
I am looking for developers with experience in the field. New developers may be welcome as well, depending on what they can do.
Please contact me.
If you are interested in this project in anyway, please contact me with the following info:

If he did, I would have an awful lot of respect for him. Actually, from looking at his website, it seems like he does have some interesting ideas. I interpret his marketing-speak in one of two ways. Either he hopes to design some new basic virtual machine that would be able to access the internet and download a more fully-functioning kernel written in some special bytecode, or, and which is probably more likely, it is a project to create a simple kernel + drivers, which loads the rest of the 'operating system' (applications) from a web site, with a possible subscription mechanism.Zacariaz wrote:i dont think chuckd1356 is ever commin back after this...
Unfortunately, I think the latter is more likely.

John.
P.S. note to self: don't disrespect other people's projects without checking them out first. Obviously it would be helpful if the information about them was more in-depth and easier to access (I mean without guessing web addresses).

Well, since you have stopped making fun of this, I'll lay everything out on the table.
We have three people, including myself, working on this project.
I am working on a deal with a web based operating system as we speak, I will not give the actual name until it goes through.
This idea has been talked about a lot, so I spoke to some big wig tech guys. I talked to the lead developer at Tompson Financial, and a former sys-admin at Tompson as well. I also spoke to the owner of a large Web 2.0 blog, and a life long friend who is a viral marketer. They all said it is definitely worth a shot, even if many people don't think the internet is headed that way. The former sys-admin told me that he really believes that Google is creating a web based operating system, and if it does, the OSI (what I'm developing) will really stand a chance.
The OSI (Operating System Interface) is not any technologically advanced thing, it is simply a way for a user to connect to a web based OS without using Windows, OS X, Linux, etc... The idea of this is to make it so light weight, that it's like it isn't even there.
Why do I want to do this? Because I think it is going to open the doors for some major advancements in the internet, and will make everyones lives a little easier.
Sorry if I tried to spice up the original post soo much that it seemed ridiculous, and trust me, I know what you mean about people ranting about how their app is going to change the world. I'm sorry if it came off that way, I sometimes get like that when I write.
Well, long story short, we are still looking for developers, even if you want to make a small contribution it would be greatly appreciated.
We are continually making changes and updates to our info site, over at http://osproject.orbun.com
, the site may even get a whole new make over soon.
If you want to help you have my contact info. We have a basecamp set up on orbun.seework.com, so if you want access, just send me your name, instant messenger, username, password, and email address, and I can set an account up for you.
Hopefully you all will react to this post better than last time, I felt as if I wrote it a bit better.
Have a great day, and again, I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

As I understand it, you want to build a compatibility layer that will allow you to "access the web based Operating System of your choice". However, there is one fundamental difficulty in this, and that is the actual hardware needed to access it.
In order to reach the level where your os can access the internet, you will probably have implemented most of the (non-gui) os anyway. So instead of writing a whole new OS, wouldn't a network-aware window manager be more to the point?
My point is that there are more people working on well-established projects, each contributing more code than your team could ever hope to match in a reasonable time. So instead of spending your time redoing the work, why can't you build up on it?
So if you want speed and small size, build a custom window-manager on top of DSL!

I hate to burst your bubble chuckd1356, But these "Web2.0" OS's are completely unrealistic.
If I understand what you're asking for, You want us to create an OS that can render these "WebOS's" without the need of "Windows or Linux".
Why bother? In order to do this you would have to write a pretty complex OS to begin with..
(After doing that.. What is the point of the WebOS??)
You would also have to...
Write drivers.. (Low level devices.. Network cards.. Wireless cards.. Video Cards.. etc)
Write a networking stack.. (Supporting protocols like IP/ARP/ICMP/TCP & UDP.. )
A GUI server of some sort.. (Which would take a lot of time.. And you probably won't have any 2D or 3D graphics acceleration..)
After all of this work you would then need to support the technologies used by these "WebOS's", So a complete HTML renderer.. Javascript... Flash? Java?
(Not to mention that you would need a complete C library or programming API to develop the above software.. You would be designing your own Web Browser! )
WebOS's are a waist of time, And will "NEVER" be a viable replacement for a real native OS, The chicken and the egg problem will always exist.

hhahahahahahahahahahahahaha... seriously though, absolutely fabulous idea.
@Brynet: The problem with "WebOS" bullshit, is not even the chicken and the egg, its simply the completey backward concept. What is the point in storing my Operating System on some other Harddrive somewhere when i have a perfectly good one right here? Why would i want to run my applications which run slow enough natively over a slow internet connection? etc etc
Don't get me wrong though, i love over-the-net Updates, the ability to connect from anywhere and even sometimes the no install idea. It is simply the jumping on the bandwagon with completely the wrong products, in completely the wrong way that ruins what could have been a good set of behind the scenes services for Operating Systems.
Even worse though is that instead of expanding the service as an efficient new Internet Protocol, they decided to decrease the speed of the web by taking up Web Server time with requests that have no place on the web. If you want a "new" internet service (i quote it, because most of the ideas are only new to the idiots on myspace who come up with ideas.) don't go adding it to the Web, that is for websites requests, not passing other forms of data.
done it
I've done something like this before for my family website. Made a login page then had a bunch of java applets, javascript, and used php extensively to allow my family to post their photos, play games, and whatever. I even had a few REAL windows programs that could be downloaded and run (single file small windows apps).
But really, if you want to do any real computing I think the stuff on your local hard drive would be a lot more useful.
