An Idea for a Competition!

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

An Idea for a Competition!

Post by Alboin »

The other night while mindlessly playing nethack (Bloody hobbits...) I had the idea of a championship for osdev. A competition that would decide which OS currently has the best features, design, etc. You would vote and whoever wins would get the fame of winning.

I just thought it would be interesting.......

What do you think?

I don't think such a competition will end well, It'll simply result in people fighting over who's OS is best.

Bad idea in my opinion, It may give one lucky member a nice ego boost.. but It'll leave many others truly disappointed.

But it'll be a vote. There'll be no discussion on the winner.

It's still a bad idea... This isn't a democracy.. Just let people code in peace

this could work..., but instead of voting we have contests: fastest on to run a given binary, etc... , i think the first contest should be who can solve 3 games of Hanoi the fastest, this will test multitasking, file loading ( the binary will be on a FAT floppy ) , system calls ( the binary will use int 45h or something ) , and display ( this will affect people who have slow display functions)

so what do you think!

Code in piece? There's an expression I've never heard before...

Seriously though, while the idea is good, it would have serious issues in implementation. For instance, we all think our own OSs are the best out of everyone else's. If we try to compare each one, we'll just create massive flame wars and possibly lose some members from the community.

I like the idea myself, but it's too difficult to implement without everyone ripping each other's heads off.

Not exactly, The "E" and "I" key are quite distant.. While I did say something about that users spelling, In this instance I didn't spell the word wrong.. I just used the wrong way of spelling the "right" word..

In my own way I'm justified.. leave me be.. 8)

Maybe I won't help ya with Hardware Datasheets next time..

Let's make a operating system in protested mode, what we'll need first? Oh yea, GDT and IDT with false and incorrect values. Now we have a working OS in protect..., pardon, protested mode. ;)
I protest to this outrageous comment!
Just kidding, of course......
