Dex is leaving, this forum

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

What do you mean hurry up? I live in Australia, and in I've been using my 24Mbit ADSL2+ connection in Brisbane (which is going through my Adelaide ISP, but I transfered it when I moved for college).

Hmmm... that's strange. Here in Queensland I can hardly find any plans.

Been there many times. Helped me choose the best router possible for my budget.

Let me rephrase my comment:
Hmmm... that's strange. Here in Queensland I can hardly find any cheap plans.

If I can find unlimited cable for $50/month I'm there.

That (above) is funny, but strangely it is factual information. *shrug*

I think that's the problem in AU. Telstra has held a monopoly on our phone and cable networks for far too long - allowing them to charge as much as they like, and it's not until recently a few ISPs have been installing their own exchange equipment and we've had some decent competition :D.

p.s. We'll miss Dex! I hope he continues to work on DexOS.. There's something unique about it I like.

If I'm not mistaken, DexOS page used to have in the links section a special note about Mega-Tokyo being a stupid forum for C osdever's only... or some such nonsense. My memory could be failing though.
The real problem with goto is not with the control transfer, but with environments. Properly tail-recursive closures get both right.

What is that speed test supposed to do? It looks like it has had the same numbers in it every time I load a page and see them pop up.

I think I might have started working at kernel development with Dex many years ago. I remember it was someone, and they told me that I was getting stuck on trivial things because I used C. This was before I started posting to the mega-tokyo forum. I do remember they went off and worked on their own kernel completely in assembler, but never got too far to quickly. I guess the assembler code was giving too trivial of problems too? :P

That is my Internet speed, but not constant - may be 1800 down. or 1500 down., or 1700 down., you know :)

And what Dex means about WebOS?..

Fairly sure he means "DHTML+ajax+html+<server side language>+start menu graphics+api==WEB OS"

Normally that is the misconception (Mostly because of the Project Named WebOS which is usually consider a "Web Desktop") And i feel far sorryier for Dex if this is idea, but i believe he is thinking more Web Service based connectivity (Sort of like Windows Live).

I like the premise but prefer working on protocols outside of the realm of the Web which are aimed for speed and portability and integrate there connectivity into the user land of my operating system. For example, using dedicated protocols i have a desktop system very similar to the standard "home" on most mail pages.

However i do not like the current "Rich Web Application" Bull crap, or the number of User Space applications being mimiced by websites. As i mention alot.. i see a tunnel and in that tunnel is a massive trainwreck full of Web 2.0 endorsees. Luckily i actually thought through my system and didnt just throw a name onto of a single Microsoft function and call it dynamic web (Ajax = XMLHttpRequest)

EDIT:

I would also like to add that my impression of a WebOS, or what it would have been 10 years ago in a time before bullshit marketing and 99% noobage... would be an operating system in the same sense that a Network Operating System is one. In this i mean, an operating system fully intergrated into the Web... i.e. a step up from Active Desktop. One thing i don't understand is why people wish to imitate Desktops inside a browser on a desktop. Why not simply intergrate the online desktop advantages into the real Desktop?

This was my main aim in making my Operating System not only Super Computer and Network ready but an Internet Operating System. Applications distributed over the net are far more transparent in nature, i do not do it because it is "cool" to imitate a desktop online, and therefore am able to skip out the middle man and have fast "anywhere you go" applications. As i have mentioned a million tiems and i hope you al lget into your heads... it is all marketing rubbish and will die out (i pray) as long as we all stick to real programming and using computers to there full instead of making it slower.

Dex wrote:I am leaving this forum, I see the desktop OS as DEAD and my true Web OS views are not welcome. I will go away and make lots of money, instead of helping fallow OS dev's.
So i will turn DexOS into the best true web OS there is, you still all have time, to see the light, do not be sheep.
Even M$ is dead: http://www.paulgraham.com/microsoft.html

PS: Dex has left the building.
Too bad. Peace out.

The idea that WebOS's (like YouOS or whatever) will take over is limited entirely to home computers, and casual users. Applications which require immediate response, security, heavy amounts of resources and servers will not be part of the WebOS crew. Personally, I HATE the idea of a web OS, that means
a.) someone else is in control of my computer
b.) my files are outside of my control (security-wise)
c.) i cant run my computer how I want to (on Unix)

A WebOS strips away my control over my machine, whats to stop the government from peeking at my logs, files etc., since clearly corporations will hand over data without breaking stride. If the desktop OS dies, it will be terribly missed     I will personally will NEVER migrate to a web OS, they are clearly designed for "end users", not developers or "power users", or for anybody who really CARES about computing. Perhaps the Windows junkies who only use their comp for email and word processing will, buts thats their loss.

DIE THIN CLIENTS DIE!!!!!

I would like to point out, a WebOS doesn't relate to developing a "real" OS, because the underlying designs are completely unrelated. Aside from UI theory stuff, i think a web dev forum would be better suited for questions relating to this.

Dont count out M$, they still have time to cut their losses and use their market share to secure a position in the new empire :( , but god, i hope they dont!

I really hope you dont cease dev on DexOS (in ASM), its quite impressive... :)

A little while ago a saw a java applet that would run bochs (on the server) and give you the screen... just gonna throw that out there.
