if somebody posts something irrelevent in a topic, it's probably not the best thing for everybody to add five replies at the end as well. It just compounds the problem.

Just let the moderators do their job instead. Deleting one post is easier than five.

I think that it would be a good idea(though not sure if implemented in these forums) that to post or anything in a guest account, you must use the image verification thing

...which is a running battle with the spambots that the captcha programmers seem to lose. Actually, software is capable of recognizing pictures where a human can't see anything.

I'd actually be interested to see what they'd do if there wasn't a "General" forum here (since apparently all the spam ends up in the "General Ramblings" / off-topic board).

Aside from that... sometimes when I look at the board (which is 2+ times / day), there's a spam thread, which I then delete. End of story (for me)...

software indeed can 'easily' read letters and digits true enough but if you show an image of a house near a lake and ask what you see(multiple-choice) then the software problably will fail, otherwise it is likely to pass the turing test.

i guess this is a minor change to the registration code, but then again i am no forum/web specialist.

Uh-huh... and who writes the cleartext parser that interprets the user's answer ("building at the shore"), including misspellings by non-native speakers and people with weak orthography?

that why i said: multiple choice. e.g. 1image and 25 answers. I think registration can be made i little more cumbersome. people who really want to join will join others don't which is problably what you want.

Is there anything that can be done about all of the porn spam? I was just wondering because this is a wonderful site, and I would like to be confident that if I visit it at school I won't get expelled. The links don't bother me so much, but the pictures have got to go.

Usually spam posts get removed the very instant a mod looks at the forum. I have yet to see a spampost that is older than a few hours.

And usually it's pretty easy to tell them apart, from their subjects alone...

Yup.. If the topic has the word Viagra, you can almost always be certain it's not about OSDev..

Spam is getting really bothersome. I started with deleting about one spam thread every other day, by now it's half a dozen every day.

All of them in "General Ramblings", all of them "first post".

Please do not reply in those spam threads. It just draws additional attention towards them, and your reply will be deleted together with the spam anyway.

Help? Perhaps adding a "timeout" between registration and first post?
