What firewall is better to install?

I have the firewall that came with my windows xp. I want a better one. What is a VERY good firewall i can download and use for free that dosen't slow down my computer?

I've never really played around with firewalls before (Using linux and all) but the free country has a page of free firewalls. here.

Hope one of them suits your needs.

Given that most free firewalls are very poor, and paid firewalls usually do more than you want them to do, a decent NAT router is the easiest solution. Its the only 'firewall' I use and need. Plus that you can connect several computers to the internet at once.

Also from experience, DONT GET NORTON PERSONAL FIREWALL 2005. Its broken.

I myself use an OpenBSD router, OpenBSD's firewall pf is very nice.

But yes, A hardware router like ones from D-Link or linksys are usually better then most software solutions.. I used a D-Link DI-604 previously.

Once your LAN is using a local IP range... Software firewalls can be rather pointless. (Unless you want to limit outgoing traffic.. but it can also be done on most routers)

(NAT ranges include 192.168.x.x, 172.16.x.x through 172.31.x.x, and 10.x.x.x)
The above IP ranges are only accessibly on private networks.. not via the Internet

I use Tiny Personal Firewall 2005, but Tiny Software doesn't exist any more, I think it is now called CA Personal Firewall (current version 2007).

Norton everything is broken by design. They're designed around making you feel perfectly safe when they're operational and licensed (and paid for).

Hmm.... hadn't noticed, to be honest. I removed the 3 URL references in the message (two of which linked a dot to his page, one which linked the unhappy smiley to his page - what kind of advertising is that?). Chase, can you remove his webpage from his profile?
