SVGA Standard?

I just deleted all my video drivers to see how easily windows coped. It started up in 640 mode... but only because i told it to in boot.ini. When i went to change resolution i found it could support upto 1280! It claims it is usign a standard VGA driver because other drivers are missing but i am confused as to how it supports high sesolutions with VGA. Any ideas or knowledge of a standard for SVGA that is simply lacking?

Here's a conundrum for you. It also made it impossible to enter standby mode. The button was disabled on the Turn off menu.

There exists a standard for BIOS calls, called VBE. Its pretty much standard on any modern card.

yes, winXP safe mode is 800x600 resolution, the only way to get 640x480 is through a special boot menu (or specifying it in the boot script as you did) winXP uses VBE2/3 (not sure which though i would guess vbe3 if its available)


as for standby -- if you deleted your drivers, then standby (and maybe hibernate) will not be available, since windows doesnt have the ability to inform the video card about the standby
