No credit card, registration and other crap!

For principle I figured it'd be best to make a topic collecting all the spam being posted here so that if one contains useful information (or a joke or such) that somebody didn't want to lose, it's stored. Also, it allows people to see how much spam we're actually getting.

This is an idea of course. If you have a reaction on the idea, please post here too.

i identified 69.210.77.129 and 67.163.153.198 as being spammers ... don't know if it will be helpful though ... they do not seem to operate from one (or a few) IP block this time...

I honstely don't see much point in keeping this tread. Plus eventually it will become huge. Oh and last thing we need is google or other search engines indexing the site by this content.

Wasn't sure of it either, but I figured I should give it a stab and see what others thought. The content is mostly still filtered, the URL's are removed (so the spammers don't get any link advantage).

If you disagree, feel free to delete this entire topic.

well, if the point is to be able to count how much spam we get (e.g. how much administrators/modders have to remove each day, what IP addresses it comes from, bla bla bla), then the topic may have some sense.

But if it's just to collect the spams we get?? wtf? the links might very well be replaced by http://deleted, just seeing yet another fr3e oFf3r f0r ch3@p xxxx makes me willing to fly miles and miles away from Internet, see? And if we simply "post them back here", we're even losing the initial IP address, so regular members might see their account disabled ...

Even if those spams have "interesting" stories about Sony recalling all PS2 because they could start hunting for your kitty due to a firmware bug ... Would you trust a spammer to deliver news? Or would you rather get the slashdot-sidebar for your webbrowser?

(not mentionning potential 14-old lurking at this topic and then 'yum yum ... pr0n spams posted here ... let's hunt to see if i can get one link before it gets deleted')

My main intent was to give people some tracking ability, partly because of the spams with jokes (bad jokes, old jokes, but nevertheless not entirely worthless) and partly because of losing all the IP address information that would be usable in tracking whether somebody is a spammer or not.

Tracking IP addresses for Forum spam posting is completely pointless. Take 2 of the IP addresses listed in this thread:

69.210.77.129 is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and uses an Ameritech DSL line.

67.163.153.198 is in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania and uses a Comcast cable modem.

A couple of non-techie people that don't know any better probably got their Windows systems infected with a virus/trojan that contained a forum spam bot. The bot may never get back to this forum and if it does those accounts have a good chance of using dynamic ip addresses.

What works much better than ip blocking is to require email address verification and ban email addresses and domains. Of course this is only the tip of the iceberg, a lot more needs to get done....

I remove between 0 and 3 per day. I expect the rest to do the same or slightly more (usually see some threads disappeared before I reacted) so that would be 5 or 6 a day, for the days that I pay attention. It's doable but annoying.
