new rego emails / new users

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

I don't mean to step out of line, Maybe updating the forum software? :P YaBB is long dead, SMF (Simple Machines Forum) has taken it's place apparently. Although I see the reason to keep this old forum is the large amount of development resources.. Also I don't like that this forum advertises users IP's to everyone :-\

As far as upgrading goes, the reason behind not upgradeing was originally php was too old. Now possibly MySQL is too old... I don't know what version it is exactly, but it might be an issue.

Now onto ip's, who cares if people can see your ip. What good is it going to do them? Not to mention that your ip is broadcasted everywhere you go on the net anyway.

Sure, but still, With the fact that bots register now.. they can also collect IP's, I was just stating that maybe you should warn people signing up that their IP is not hidden for their security, Only admin's and mods should see them? Seems like it'd be something worth mentioning don't ya think :P

A big warning stating that users IP's are foolishly flaunted throughout the forum is not mentiond when registering.. ;)

From the SMF Site...

[*]Any webserver that properly supports PHP, such as Apache or Internet Information Services (IIS).
[*]MySQL 3.23.4 or higher.

There are certain required directives that need to be enabled in php.ini for PHP 4.1.0 and higher. Other than that, a simple install test wouldn't hurt... I think you would be really impressed with SMF :)

I am impressed with SMF... read the credits for SMF... notice my name? ;) Naturally, I also know the requirements. :P

Same for YaBBSE. The credits for YaBBSE have my name in it too.

Still, there is no reason to hide the IP-addresses. Even if someone could use them maliciously, it's all because that the owners of the IP-addresses haven't got proper firewalls or any other safety measures. And in that case, chances are "the hackers" would still be able to "hack" those people just by scanning a particular IP-range for some vulnerability.

Connect an unpatched win2k machine to the internet and it's got a bot of sorts within 17 minutes. Good luck registering here, posting and being hacked because of that before you get a simple hack.

I'm sure I used SMF on 3.x and it ran fine... 4.0 should have worked perfectly.
