im sick of tecknology advances
im sick of tecknology advances
I resently baught a laptop (2 month ago) and now two months later I can get core 2 duo laptops for the same price with better graphics card and i know that in a few more month as soon as core 2 duo is esstablished it will soon be completly outdated and wont be able to use half of the new programs without lag. You may say its a good idea to upgrade my laptop (yes you can easly change the proc on this one) but ive tried and apparently the voltage isnt high enough.
by the looks of it upgrading is becoming an imposibility.
I need to get a new desktop soon (i was told in less im prepared to pay 1200 pounds to get the old (1 year old) peaces specially made to fit into my 'old' desktop)so i was wandering if anybody new about any upcoming graphics, RAM, disk, or proc so i can know whent to bie it so it doesnt have problems running the newest programs a few month later.
but apparently I was told i bought my laptop at a bad time because there was a suden outburst of advances in tecknology. so I would like to know if there are any up coming increadible advances in tecknology because this really anoying.
thanks in advance,
Jules

Re:im sick of tecknology advances
I personally decide what system I need and go for that one. The system I'm pricing up at the moment comes to a mere ?600 and that's as high-end as I need to go before the difference becomes pointless. New stuff just for the sake of having the newest stuff is wasted cash, if what you have worked for what you're using it for 6 months ago then there's no reason (outside of marketing) that it won't do exactly the same job now.
Basically, there's always going to be better things for the same price, but if you keep waiting then you'll never end up buying anything. Just decide how much power you need and stick with that.

yep, no ones on the bleading egde, couse the thing will be dated before they can even get it home...
Re:im sick of tecknology advances
As a matter of interest, I keep a little spreadsheet on my desktop with my 'dream machine' specifications. If I say that at least some component of it is updated every month, then you know it's silly to even try to aim for the deadly keen edge of the blade. The time it takes some places to even ship a system (admittedly I can't think of anywhere that would consider shipping systems with that spec) would make it outdated.

Re:im sick of tecknology advances
ya but still from a pentium D to a core 2 duo for the same price in about 2 months that is quiet bad
Re:im sick of tecknology advances
Why is that bad?! That's good. More with less. Soon everybody on this earth have their own handheld portable computers. That gives us more scientist in the long run, which means the technology starts advancing with even bigger rate.
With this speed, nobody needs to work anymore in fifty years. (I'm pioneer... ;D )
I admit it, I like it, I love it.
What is bad that we still don't have the technology to handle that big changes in technology...

Re:im sick of tecknology advances
ya but i think ive been riped of because I payed for a pentium D 2.0GHz proc and 2 months later they already have core 2 duo 2GHz procs for the same price.
Oh and I also reallised that the dell XPS systems can have upto 4GB of RAM without being a mobile work stations (ok it cost more than the basic price of the laptop) how is this possible have they invented 2GB notebook RAM sticks

Re:im sick of tecknology advances
the problem is tecknology is getting much faster and not that much cheaper, we wouldn't have this problem with upgrades if pentium D 2.0GHz cost $2 and 2 months later they have core 2 duo for $2 ;D
Re:im sick of tecknology advances
For everyday use there's absolutely squat difference between single-core 2GHz and dual-core 2GHz except that if the dual-core has both clocked cores at 2GHz it'll be putting out almost double the heat. If it has both clocked at 1GHz (thus adding to get the 2GHz figure) then it'll be half the speed for most of your things.
As for the laptops, it's probably 4 1GB sticks.

Re:im sick of tecknology advances
two 1GHz cores are 80% as efficient as one 2GHz core( say that fast ;D )
Re:im sick of tecknology advances
I only get what I need. A Pentium 2, 3 Pentium 1s and 4 486s suite me well.
Re:im sick of tecknology advances
Firstly, what? doesnt dual core give out twice the output (2hGHZ x 2) and secondly all the laptops ive meet for the moment inless they are mobile work station dont have 4 ram slots

Re:im sick of tecknology advances
If we're talking about 2 2GHz cores then of course they will be faster than a single 2GHz core (while giving out twice the heat and consuming twice the power of course, assuming roughly equal design). However this depends on a lot of factors. For instance, if you are running programs not designed to run on a multi-processor system then performance can actually drop compared to a single core, and the situation is even worse if the OS itself isn't designed for multi-processor systems (and no, a single-core OS hacked to switch on both cores and provide appropriate mutex primitives etc doesn't count as using the cores properly). Even if everything is designed to play nicely then you still won't be getting double the speed due to things sometimes having to switch the core they execute on, things requiring bus locks, things wanting to access memory in a different domain (depending on the type of system), etc etc.doesnt dual core give out twice the output (2hGHZ x 2)
