Which laptop?
Which laptop?
Hellos, I recently got my income tax return, thought maybe I should blow the extra cash on buying a brand new laptop. But I've nevered really knew what is good in the laptops department, so I need you guys opinions on which is good to buy.
I got about 1.5k (cdn) budget, I prefer the laptop to be black (which doesn't seem common anymore). The speed isn't very important for me, I like a laptop that consumes little power so battery life is used more efficently. I also had an idea but not sure if its a wise one, to leave a laptop as a light weight server (replacing my old desktop one that consumes so much power).
Any opinion is welcomed, thanks

Re:Which laptop?
Well It would be help full to now what kind of use youre going to put it to (except a server) like foto processing extra.
Next do you meen 1.5k$ or 1.5kGBP or anyother currency and
if you are going to use it as a server I recomend a laptop with server power + high batery efficiency I recomend a Intel? mobile Core? Duo Processor T2500 got a very good baterry eficiency and two cores that run at 2GHz for nearly no extra watage
stay safe

Re:Which laptop?
1.5K $CDN is canadian dollars, which is (iirc) 0.7 USD or 0.6 EUR (both estimates - check your own financial exchange office).

Actually, it's 0.9 USD today, and 0.7 EUR.

- My brain got stuck in an infinite loop while trying to design the memory manager

according to the local exchanger (www.gwk.nl):Colonel Kernel wrote: Actually, it's 0.9 USD today, and 0.7 EUR.
1500,00 CND == 1156,40 USD (at a rate of 0.77094)
1500,00 CND == 966,81 EUR (at a rate of 0.64454)
That money would buy you a moderate laptop here. Nothing very high-end or so, but I'm not sure about relative pricing actually being near equal.
Re:Which laptop?
Yeah, its probably only enough for a low to mid range laptops, depending on the name brand and never bothers me if I have a IBM or so. But I could possibly put in some more money if its worth it.
The last time I checked the canadian dollar was 0.9 of USD, not really sure no more. To make things less confusing, maybe just recommend a mid range laptop, high-end equiped with 2 GHZ Duo doesn't look too affordable for me.
I don't really know if a laptop is capable of leaving on for 24/7 and might overheat. If its capable, Id replace my old desktop server with it. If not, I'd use it for mainly programming and microsoft office. Speed isn't important but unplugging the AC power and going to my backyard and do some programming would be nice, so battery efficency is needed.
Thanks guys.

dual core 2GHz a 1GB of ram 80 GB hard disk and is just over youre price limit: 1579$.
The only proble is it has a 14 inch LCD, but if you want to you can plug it into a screen (it has a VGA port).
and if you want cheaper and dont mind a 12.45inch screen go hear:http://www.alienware.com/product_detail ... KU-DEFAULT
the only proble is that they dont have graphivs cards, just inbilt chip sets but if youre not going to use it for advanced 3D gaming it should hold up to youre requierements.
You get du8al core 3GHz and a 1GB of ram

Re:Which laptop?
Seeing as most of the discussion up to now was about canadian dollars versus US dollars and how a US dollar is worth more than a canadian dollar, and that he's specifying his amount as explicitly being canadian dollars, how can you still miss the point?suthers wrote: try hear:

Re:Which laptop?
First of all, the sole reason I'm avoiding duo processors because from the power specs its wattage is quite high, and thus would drain more battery, usually laptops equiped with duo have batteries with higher mAh and possibly charge time is longer (to me this knocks out the mobility in laptops). I don't mind if its core solo or pentium m (ULV designs) which is 5.5w compared to the core duo 9w on a 1.09ghz (lowest for duo), and goes up higher the higher the processor frequency. I don't do much gamming, if I do it would be on my desktop, and by the way, from the picture I'd feel weird carrying a laptop with a alien's face on the back of the LCD display.suthers wrote: dual core 2GHz a 1GB of ram 80 GB hard disk and is just over youre price limit: 1579$.
