processor changing

I want to change my laptops processor from a single core to a dual core processor, but a friend of mine said that it wasnt possible, I know from the intel website that to be able to use dual core we need a bios which is dual core anabled, can somebody tell me were to get a dual core anabled bios, if it is possible to change from single to dual core processor.

It depends heavily on the people who made your processor whether this will be possible at all. You should first check if you can even get to the processor in order to change it, preferably without dismantling the laptop as this is often not possible. Second, you should make sure the new processor's thermal dissipation is approximately the same as the old one, laptop's won't like you at all if you make them run even hotter. Thirdly you should make sure the motherboard will take the new processor, as AFAIK only AMD bothered to make the dual-cores compatible with single-core processors (with socket 939). Fourthly you will probably need to flash the BIOS and hope nothing goes wrong there.

Its a intel processor and the new processor i am planing on buying has approximitly the same speed as the other one but just in case how can I get an extra internal cooling system for a laptop. Il find out what the motherboard is.

Oh and how do you flash the bios I have tried BIOS tools but I cant instal it and I have an isurance that covers this kind of damage (caused by the user for modification of an electrical defice that the user believed to be safe ( don't tell the insurance I said that ;D))

This rings alarm bells immediately, in laptops if something's not designed to be changed then it's usually a good idea to steer well clear.

Speed means nothing (especially if it's an Intel chip and both cores are clocked at that speed, which would result in a massive heat increase). Thermal dissipation is what you need to know.

As with most things in the laptop world, if it doesn't already have it then it can't be given it.

Given the very tight spacing on virtually all laptop components, I'm gonna guess no, plus there aren't even ones for desktops these days as the electronics would be horribly complicated and I'd guess it'd mostly be a hack job.

If it takes you 5 hours to get to one part, do not modify it. It took me 2 hours to rip my old laptop apart and to get it running without any plastics attached, including getting to the processor.

is it the same socket? can the lappy handle the heat, does it supply the right voltage/power/amps/blah to the socket? is a bios update available for your brand+model of motherboard? (most laptops have non standard oem type mobos...)

i would steer clear of trying to modify a laptop, they were never meant for it. even changing minipci is a pain.

Should be possible in most cases (all laptops I've seen so far).

Ya actually it is compatible I was wrong does anybody now were I can get a cheap Intel mobile dual core processor.

in all earnest, I'd avoid changing cpu in a laptop without having the proper knowledge. Do you have the proper knowledge?

And as I mentioned, unless it is mentioned in the documentation as a reasonable upgrade path, going single-core to dual-core and having the same cooling capacity is usually a bad idea. Unless the cores are significantly down-clocked compared to your current processor (thus removing any benefit) they will most likely put out a lot more heat than your current one.

you can get a notepal (external laptop cooler) & a small fan which can fit in the laptop put it ontop of the processor or next to it or a liquid cooling istem is a posibility
