Partially agreeing. Well, no, not really. But for politicians it might not be a good thing (tm) to do such comparisions. perhaps because they are afraid of the reactions in the other countries... It's generally not very good to have someone in your party that compared Bush with Hitler and then have to do some diplomacy with the USAIs mentioning Hitler some sort of taboo in Germany?
.But in general mentioning Hitler is not a taboo in Germany. I think the Germans are very well aware of their history, but that might just be my opinion as a german.
But something you really shouldn't do in Germany is wearing nazi symbols or putting your right hand up when greeting someone

Fawlty Towers reference, possibly the best scene they did, though it might offend any German viewers that take it too seriously unfortunately.

John Cleese (sp?), playing a hotel manager who is expecting German guests.
