Re:Tim Robinson?
Have you tried to send him e-mail?
Re:Tim Robinson?
I say good riddance. Not too fond of the guy, as back when I was trying to grasp the very basics of programming and had a question, no matter which question, he kept saying I should get a book, which beats the purpose of a programming section, or a forum. Not really befitting for somebody that ought to keep it running smoothly, pushing away aspiring programmers instead of lending a helping hand.

Re:Tim Robinson?
You wanted to learn programmin on forum? WOW! There's too much basic questions on forums, and the answers you can find in any book easy, if you want to. So if you don't know anything, try reading some book first on that subject, the try doing it, and then ask question it something goes wrong. I think he was right about that. There's too much people expecting someone else can explain them everything on some magic and easy way so that they don't need to do hard learning. Well, programming isn't easy to learn, and you must learn it by yourself, nobady can do it for you.
P.S. Tim Robinson is a great programmer, I have learnd a lot from his texts, and I think it's a great lost for MT because he hasn't been her for last few years.

Re:Tim Robinson?
Well, I was learning from online tutorials and help from a great programmer already, but things neither the tutorials nor that programmer could answer was what I asked on here
Re:Tim Robinson?
"Good riddance" towards a person that contributed heavily, both to the FAQ and the forum, because he pointed out that many of your early questions would have been answered by the average textbook? :-\
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.
Re:Tim Robinson?
Besides, Kon-Tiki, he did answer your questions, so you have nothing to complain about. He also suggested you read a book about the topic, since it would've been the best thing for you to do.
There's an old saying in Estonia, "uppuja p??stmine on uppuja enese asi", or loosely translated into English: "saving someone who's drowning only matters to himself/herself".
Basically, it means (though it's hard to translate) that no one has to help you if you don't want to help yourself whatsoever. After all, people here help you from their good will, not because someone pays them, and it's a lot easier for them if you cooperate and study a bit on your own.
Just my two cents.

there's a similar saying in english, "God helps those who help themselves."Eero R?nik wrote: There's an old saying in Estonia, "uppuja p??stmine on uppuja enese asi", or loosely translated into English: "saving someone who's drowning only matters to himself/herself".

"Give a man a fish and feed him for a day; Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime."
Top three reasons why my OS project died:
- Too much overtime at work
- Got married
- My brain got stuck in an infinite loop while trying to design the memory manager
Re:Tim Robinson?
Y'all seem to miss that I actually was learning it and that the stuff I couldn't find from the tutorials were the things I asked ::)
Re:Tim Robinson?
And that means it's a good thing that Tim isn't visiting regularily anymore?
Sorry for picking on you, but there's a tendency in this forum I am loath to see.
I would expect that someone asking questions in a forum like this has at least "read the book". If someone asks a question like "why should I split my sources into multiple files, it's so confusing", the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
I don't recall the exact thread you're referring to, but if your question would have been answered if you had read but one of the basic books (and remembered what you read), then I'm 100% behind Tim.
And even if it weren't, we're enduring some guests here who have laden worse on their backs than a "RTFM" or another. "Good riddance" is simply out of line.

Re:Tim Robinson?
That only happens to me when somebody does that for a large project and THEN asks why he shouldn't. I've seen a C compiler in a single file of 160kbyte.Solar wrote: If someone asks a question like "why should I split my sources into multiple files, it's so confusing", the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
OT: I very much agree Tim was quite a valuable addition to the forum. In the same way I hear people complaining about Solar being harsh to them because he just keeps answering with the same thing (which in the end is the cause), people are complaining about me and Tim as well, for pretty much the same thing. We're just here to help you, we're here a lot because we like this and we're moderator to keep the forum readable to all people. So topics go where they belong, you don't mess up the layout with long URL's (I'm usually the one to fix that I think) and people who ask questions that have been asked before or that could have been answered from the FAQ, will be sent to the old topic and/or the FAQ.
Re:Tim Robinson?
Hmmm... looked those questions back up again. Calling a function in C by doing cal(my_function);... woops :-[ Dumb thing's that I really did take tutorials. I can understand how somebody'd think I didn't, after reading that, though. 't Just pissed me off back then to hear 'bout how I should read a book on it, while I did what I could, even asked Tim if a book I found was good (Bruce Eckel's Thinking In C++), to which I didn't get a reply. More sounded like he didn't want me to learn or help than the opposite. Ah well, my bad on this.
Re:Tim Robinson?
No bad feelings, OK?
I don't always answer all questions either, because my online time here is, well, tidal in nature.
And perhaps Tim didn't know the book, in which case it's again netiquette not to clutter the thread with "don't know it" but leave the answer to someone who would. (And nobody else answered, either, if I understand correctly.)
In the end, we all live and learn.
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.
Re:Tim Robinson?
That book was through PM, and turned out that that one's one of the main online resources
