Is there a way to password protect a folder under Windows? I want to protect my homework assignments and such from deletion by unscrupulous siblings and relatives over the Christmas holidays

On an NTFS file system you can modify the file permissions so that only you have access to them (but the "Administrator" [not sure about just accounts with Admin priviledges] can "take ownership" and reclaim access if someone else has the password).
Other than that you can use a Linux EXT2 partition with a Windows viewer or a backup copy on a CD or floppy disk.

Or you could make them hidden, and get them back by allowing viewing of hidden files/folders (in folder options).
While we're on topic, I've a bit of a problem myself. On my version of windows (Windows XP Pro x64 Edition), the tab under folder/file properties does not have what it should for XP Pro...eg, there is nothing to set privelages for it. Why is this, and what can I do about it?

It has to be enabled manually, same as Pro. Go into the Folder Options and untick "Use Simple File Sharing".
