Resizing a NTFS partition

Well, I just got my Ubuntu linux discs today. But it's utility isn't able to resize my partition because it uses a NTFS file system for windows XP.

Does anyone know a good and free tool that can resize my partition to free up enough space to install Ubuntu?

I don't think there is a free tool to do so, as Microsoft patented NTFS 5 and did not release full documentation. Not even the Linux kernel can write NTFS 5 properly.

I didn't say that there aren't any tools capable of doing this - PartitionMagic and Norton Ghost spring to mind. With a bit of luck, you might be able to get your hands on one of these for free, if you get my meaning.

I tried a demo version of partition magic... and it looks like it would work. But too bad it doesn't actually apply the changes, it just pops up the "this is a demo" message.

QtParted is able to resize NTFS partitions. It can be found on Knoppix CD, for example.

QtParted is for linux... I am running windows, I need a partition program for windows so I can install linux.

As for SystemRescueCd, I don't have a working burner... and I don't have the money to pay for them to ship me a cd.

The only reason I even have Ubuntu linux is because it's totally free, including no shipping cost.

Ubuntu comes with two CDs, doesn't it? One of them being a live Linux disc, which'll allow you to use Linux right away after booting. As is Knoppix/Gnoppix.

Yeah, but the live copy is very slow since it has to constantly read from disc to operate.

So I can use linux without installing... but all the apps are so slow it's unbearable.

I either need a windows app, or something that boots up to do the partitioning.

I have this cool utility cd that i got from somewhere which is bootable and has a copy of Partition Magic 8.something DOS version. Works great.

I believe the point was you could use the Linux partition tools using the LiveCD, unless there are none on the disk (which I would think is unlikely).

There is one on the disk... but it doesn't seem to work with a NTFS file system. From what I am reading in the wiki for ubuntu, NTFS is the only one that doesn't work and requires you to find another program to resize it.

if you have the knoppix cd, its like a live cd, boot it and use QTParted to resize your ntfs disk...

my amd64 ubuntu turned up today. i agree the live cd is so slooooow its glacial.

i think i like KDE more than gnome but i am going to put ubuntu on so i can have a 64bit dev environment to work some of my stuff out on...
