Choosing the right one...

Post by dh »

Just an up in the air question. What university would be the best if I'm interested in OSdevin' for a living? Personally I'm doing my best to make myself eledgable for MIT but one should always have a second option.

Can't comment on US universities, or the US education system as a whole, and I'm not really an insider of the OS Dev industry, I can just judge from what I know how things are here in good ol' Germany.

But I'd say which university is secondary to what kind of expertise you achieve in your studies and other projects. Having a degree opens the door (unfortunately, as I don't have one), but the skills you picked up under your own power are what gets you inside. You could be an MIT alumni all you like, but if you just took the average course collection and mostly did play PS2 after class, that won't earn you anything. If you can show a couple of OS-related private projects, and a dedicated selection of courses, that tells something about you.

All that being said, it's a very small market. Not much OS dev'ing done out there (compared to, say, late 80ies).
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.

@Solar: That's one of the reasons I'm interested in doing this for a livving.

I'm not focused on going to an american school (auctly I'd rather not) and I'd like to hear from EVERYWHERE

Cheers, DH.
PS. I'm not anti-american!!
