Ok, here's the story. About two weeks ago, I needed to format my comp and re?nstall everything. For the reformatting, my brother added two extra HDs (both of about 500Mb, one containing Windows98SE now, the other Program Files) while I keep my 4Gb HD to put all my stuff on. All went fine, I installed the drivers for my graph card, then for my soundcard (ASL 4000), but they gave problems. After a few days, I got it so that System->Hardware said they were installed properly, but they didn't work, even after I put it in a different PCI-slot. I started to get annoyed with it and asked my brother to put it in his comp and see if the card works with its Linux drivers. Didn't work either, so I guessed the card must've been broken and I looked around for the cheapest soundcard around, being a Hercules Muse Lt. I removed the drivers of the ASL, took the card out and put the new one in, followed the instructions to install the drivers and... it didn't work. I tried and I tried, ran all executables possible from the CD that came along with it, and failed miserably. After about five hours, the card did work, and to test if it'd stay that way, I rebooted the comp, only to see it stopped working again after that. I've got a link from a friend which said the card needed Windows Update to be installed first, so I did that, and it still didn't work. I downloaded drivers from the 'net and tried them, but nothing either. I'm completely stumped now. Anybody know how I can finally get sound and music again?
Edit: and the comp has no on-board sound devices. Wouldn't have the need of a soundcard in the first place if it had.
